Hingham 2s shared the points with Malayalees in a memorable contest.

After spending most of the warm up tussling with the Ring Go parking app, the captain won the toss and elected to field with cloudy conditions and a green pitch looking as though it would lend plenty of help to the bowlers.

This proved to be the case, with Benson (5-35) at his unplayable best, leaving Malayalees at 43-6 following an excellent opening spell. Stefin Salu led a counter attack for the hosts with a well made 36 before being dismissed by Fitchett (2-17), from here Shackleton (2-23) picked up the final wickets to bowl Malayalees out for 95.

Hingham made a steady start with the bat before quick wickets had the home team’s tails up and a period of consolidation was required to chip away at the total. Edward Proctor’s 25 led the scoring for Hingham but after being dismissed with 26 runs required, a nervy finish was in store. Dan Fenton (13) edged Hingham closer to a win but departed with 5 runs still to get. After a tail-end partnership ground out some precious runs to level the scores, Malayalees found a final wicket to end the match in a tie.

Despite not quite getting over the line by the barest of margins, the 2s can take a huge amount of positives from another highly competitive game against strong opposition.

Hingham fell short despite a determined effort with both bat and ball.

After losing early wickets, Aslam Mohammed produced the standout innings of the day, striking 55 from just 47 deliveries, including four boundaries and two sixes, to give Hingham’s innings some much-needed impetus. Ashley Drohan added a patient 35, while Jordan Lake (14) and Ross Sanders (13) made starts, but regular wickets prevented the hosts from building the partnerships required to post a commanding total.

With the ball, Hingham fought hard to defend their score. Lewis Venables struck early to remove Ryan Hayward, while Jordan Lake picked up the important wicket of Alex Clark after his well-made half-century. Aslam Mohammed and Jake Scent also chipped in with wickets as Hingham continued to battle throughout the chase.

Despite their efforts, Great Melton held their nerve to reach the target, with Hingham left to reflect on a spirited display that featured notable performances from Mohammed, Drohan and the bowling unit.
