⛳️ 100 Holes Complete!

What an incredible achievement by Simon Jennions, who today completed the remarkable challenge of playing 100 holes of golf in a single day at Hindley Hall.

Playing in memory of his father, former Club Captain Peter Jennions, Simon set out to raise £1,000 for Wigan & Leigh Hospice — a charity that provided such wonderful care and support to Peter and his family.

Not only did Simon complete all 100 holes, but thanks to the incredible generosity of members, friends and supporters, he has already raised an amazing £1,590, smashing his original target.

A huge congratulations and thank you to Simon for his determination, and to everyone who has donated and supported him throughout the day.

If you’d still like to make a donation and help push the total even higher, you can do so here:

We’ve all been stuck behind it.
We’ve all complained about it.
Some of us might even be guilty of it…

Why does slow play happen?
What do the Rules of Golf actually say?
Why do clubs introduce pace-of-play guidelines?
And are golfers being unfairly blamed?

Whether you agree or disagree, this is a conversation every golfer should hear.

🏆 Hewlett Cup Champion 2026 🏆

Congratulations to Danny Tickle, who has won the Hewlett Cup with an impressive aggregate score of 139.

In a closely fought competition, Gary Matthews finished as runner-up, with Keith Stokes taking third place.

The Hewlett Cup remains one of the club’s most prestigious competitions, and Danny’s name will now take its place alongside previous winners in Hindley Hall history.

Congratulations to Danny and well played to all who competed. 👏⛳

💚 The Heart of Hindley Hall 💚

Golf clubs don't run themselves.

Behind every competition, presentation evening, charity day, podcast episode, newsletter, team match, social event and course improvement is a group of people giving their time, skills and energy for the benefit of others.

At Hindley Hall, we are fortunate to have volunteers in every corner of the club. Some roles are obvious, such as Captains, Presidents, committee members, team captains and junior organisers. Others are less visible but no less important — podcast producers, Herald contributors, raffle organisers, starters, scorers, referees, course raters and countless others working quietly behind the scenes.

Around the club, volunteers continue to leave their mark. Alan Ashurst and Bill Mulvey recently constructed the new fence behind the 4th tee. Mike Wane and Ian Rimmer refurbished the steps at the 1st tee. Alan, Bill and Keith Fairhurst built the new bin surrounds around the course. The gazebo was erected by members, the planters were handcrafted by Len Myers, and the flowers and plants were generously donated and planted by fellow members.

Away from the course, Darren Wood continues to produce and direct the Herald Podcast, while our wonderful raffle organisers, Lilian Houghton and Joan Cann, continue to support club events with enthusiasm that inspires us all.

Former Captain Aiden Murphy recently reflected on his year in office and spoke of the privilege of representing the club, supporting members at Victory Trophy events, raising £2,500 for Wigan & Leigh Hospice, and experiencing first-hand the dedication of the volunteers who help keep the club moving forward. His biggest takeaway was simple: volunteering is not about recognition — it's about the members and the club.

Bill Mulvey, who has spent decades volunteering at Hindley Hall, summed it up perfectly. From renovating clubhouse windows and extending the patio to helping build the gazebo and serving as Club President, his experiences have been shaped by friendship, pride and a desire to give something back.

The truth is that golf cannot function without volunteers. It is as simple as that.

To everyone who gives their time, whether it's every week or just occasionally, whether it's highly visible or completely behind the scenes, thank you.

You are the reason Hindley Hall is more than just a golf club.

You are the heart of it.

Last Thursday’s Ladies’ Presentation Evening was another wonderful celebration of great golf and great company at Hindley Hall.

Congratulations to Bev Fairhurst, winner of the Wendy Cordner Vase, a trophy held in memory of former member Wendy Cordner, who was known for her fun-loving nature and remains fondly remembered by all who knew her.

A special well done also to Andrea Shawcross, who enjoyed a fantastic evening by winning both the Frances Smyth Qualifier and the prestigious Lady President’s Prize, one of the ladies’ board competitions.

Congratulations to all of our prize winners and thank you to everyone who attended another enjoyable evening in the clubhouse. 💚⛳️

Congratulations to Anthony Skeat, who has been selected as Hindley Hall Seniors President for the North West Seniors League Presidents’ Day, which will be hosted at Hindley Hall on 22nd September 2026.

As part of the selection process, North West Seniors League Chairman Nigel Fairhurst invited clubs to nominate a representative for this prestigious role. Hindley Hall’s nomination, put forward by Gary Matthews, was Anthony Skeat — a fitting choice in recognition of his longstanding contribution to the club and its members.

Anthony will host the presentations on Presidents’ Day and will also be involved in welcoming league representatives to Hindley Hall for both Presidents’ Day and the league AGM.

A thoroughly deserved honour for one of the club’s most respected members. Congratulations, Anthony.

Some challenges are bigger than golf.

In our latest Herald Extra episode, we sit down with Simon Jennions as he prepares to take on an incredible challenge — 100 holes of golf in a single day in aid of Wigan & Leigh Hospice.

Simon is undertaking the challenge in memory of his father, Peter Jennions, a former Hindley Hall Club Captain and a much-loved member of our club. It’s a moving conversation about family, memories, golf, and giving something back to a charity that provided such important care and support.

Whether you knew Peter personally or simply want to support a fantastic local cause, we hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch Simon’s story.

If you’d like to support Simon’s fundraising effort, you can donate here:

Please give the video a watch, leave Simon a message of support, and help us spread the word.

A wonderful evening at last Wednesday’s Gent’s Presentation Evening, with a fantastic turnout, a great atmosphere and plenty of prizes presented from the opening competitions of the season.

One of the standout moments of the night was the presentation of the Tony Buckels Trophy, a competition held in memory of former Club Captain Tony Buckels. This year’s winner received a beautiful wildlife painting, generously donated by Tony’s son, Nigel Buckels.

The painting served as a fitting tribute to Tony and was a reminder of the lasting impact that past members and captains continue to have on our club.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make it such an enjoyable evening. Congratulations to all of our prize winners.
