💚 The Heart of Hindley Hall 💚
Golf clubs don't run themselves.
Behind every competition, presentation evening, charity day, podcast episode, newsletter, team match, social event and course improvement is a group of people giving their time, skills and energy for the benefit of others.
At Hindley Hall, we are fortunate to have volunteers in every corner of the club. Some roles are obvious, such as Captains, Presidents, committee members, team captains and junior organisers. Others are less visible but no less important — podcast producers, Herald contributors, raffle organisers, starters, scorers, referees, course raters and countless others working quietly behind the scenes.
Around the club, volunteers continue to leave their mark. Alan Ashurst and Bill Mulvey recently constructed the new fence behind the 4th tee. Mike Wane and Ian Rimmer refurbished the steps at the 1st tee. Alan, Bill and Keith Fairhurst built the new bin surrounds around the course. The gazebo was erected by members, the planters were handcrafted by Len Myers, and the flowers and plants were generously donated and planted by fellow members.
Away from the course, Darren Wood continues to produce and direct the Herald Podcast, while our wonderful raffle organisers, Lilian Houghton and Joan Cann, continue to support club events with enthusiasm that inspires us all.
Former Captain Aiden Murphy recently reflected on his year in office and spoke of the privilege of representing the club, supporting members at Victory Trophy events, raising £2,500 for Wigan & Leigh Hospice, and experiencing first-hand the dedication of the volunteers who help keep the club moving forward. His biggest takeaway was simple: volunteering is not about recognition — it's about the members and the club.
Bill Mulvey, who has spent decades volunteering at Hindley Hall, summed it up perfectly. From renovating clubhouse windows and extending the patio to helping build the gazebo and serving as Club President, his experiences have been shaped by friendship, pride and a desire to give something back.
The truth is that golf cannot function without volunteers. It is as simple as that.
To everyone who gives their time, whether it's every week or just occasionally, whether it's highly visible or completely behind the scenes, thank you.
You are the reason Hindley Hall is more than just a golf club.
You are the heart of it.
