I've put together another blog post - this one explaining why i use clicker training as my training method of choice.
I'd like to hear your thoughts:
Why do you use clicker training?
If you don't currently use it are you tempted to give it a try?
How does it sit with your belief system vs other methods?
Photo of Norbert having a treat!

Recently I saw a post in one of the clicker groups asking people about how they feel about riding and whether it was appropriate. At the time I responded my 2 pence in a summary. A friend and fellow trainer asked me if I would write an article and I thought - why not?
I found that I rather enjoyed writing it, thinking about the subject and putting my thoughts together. So I thought I would start a blog where I can add any articles, thoughts and stories - so I intend to write more in the future.
My first blog post is my article on riding, when I feel it is appropriate and my strategy to determine whether it is or isn't. I have taken a holistic approach, partly because I wanted to write something that people could use as a guide; but also because often times people only consider one aspect i.e. behavioural reasons, ethical reasons or physical reasons - and I feel that actually it is all important.
Since I intend to write more, Is anything that you would like to read in more detail? Or a topic that would interest you? I can add these to my list of ideas. Plus - are there any times you would like to add that riding would or would not be appropriate?
Photo taken from on board Walter! I'll put a link to the blog post in the comments.

Update on the balance pads:
If you guys remember I added a picture of pads and asked what people would do with them? Well it would appear Norbert decided to teach us something new that none of us thought of!
He has come up with two new games (i'll get a pic of the other at some point) and this is his current favourite. If i scatter the pads over the floor, he likes finding them himself with his feet. He invented this new game when the pads had got into a mess. In this pic he has just "found" a pad with his foot and very proud of himself he was too!

I love how creative this pony has become, he participates in everything with enthusiasm and loves to make things up for himself 😍
What creative things do your horses like to do?

An update on my platforms!
Norbert has since done the real "strength test", as he is a very big boy! I don't think Norbert has ever played with platforms before but he absolutely loved it and was very proud of himself to be even taller! And of course i am very proud of the once nervous chap who now will copy Walter and trust me with his safety - confidently clopping over anything i ask him to.
One thing we have decided is that the platforms are too slippery in the wet, so we are going to put a non slip surface over them to improve grip.

Mark has made me some new platforms for the boys!
These are very common in horse training. Do you have one? If so where did you get it from?
If not is this something you want for your horse?
Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

So let's get some fun discussions going!
Here is Walter's hind feet on 2 foam pads.
Why would this be a useful behaviour to teach? What end goals could this be used for?
How would you go about teaching it?
What behaviours would you teach beforehand in order to get here?
Hint: there are several answers for each of these, so give as many as you can!
I'll top up the ideas list with my thoughts in the comments tomorrow.
