A Captain’s Farewell 👋

7 years at the helm. 106 games captained. And a Club left in an incredibly strong place - both on and off the field.

Tomorrow marks the final time Benji will captain the 1st XI, bringing to an end a remarkable seven-year tenure after taking on the role in 2020.

During his time as Club Captain, Benji has overseen a period of tremendous stability and success at Hertford, with the Club maintaining its position at the pinnacle of Hertfordshire cricket.

But Benji’s contribution to Hertford has extended far beyond what has been seen on the field.

He has given an enormous amount of time, energy and commitment to the captaincy, setting high standards and expectations across the Club while consistently putting Hertford first. On countless occasions, Benji has been willing to make sacrifices to his position in the batting order to create opportunities for the next generation of players coming through.

That selfless, club-first approach is perhaps best reflected in the success of the wider club this season, with both the 2nd and 3rd XIs enjoying excellent campaigns. The strength and depth we see across the Club today is, in no small part, a reflection of the culture Benji has helped to build during his time as captain.

His most memorable achievement, I'm sure, came in 2021, when Hertford lifted the Herts T20 Cup and won the Premiership Division play-off - a phenomenal double and one that will always hold a special place in the Club’s history.

Thank you for everything you have given to Hertford Cricket Club as captain. Please join us in wishing Benji all the very best for tomorrow, and for whatever comes next at HCC.

A huge weekend ahead for our men's teams with plenty to play for across all four fixtures 👇

The 1s travel to Harpenden sitting 8th in the Premiership Division, just 2 points ahead of Broxbourne and 10 ahead of Radlett. A win will secure their place in the division for the 2027 season.

The 2s welcome Datchworth to Balls Park, with victory keeping their hopes of a 3rd-place finish alive and rounding off what has been a fantastic season for the team.

The 3s currently sit 3rd in Division 6B. While promotion is unfortunately no longer possible this season, a victory would be the perfect way to cap off what has been a fantastic campaign.

The 4s, much like the 1s, find themselves in a relegation battle. Currently just 9 points clear of Old Owens, a win would secure their place in the division for next season and provide a huge boost heading into the final stages of the campaign.

Plenty to play for. Let’s get behind the guys. Good luck to all this weekend!

Recapping on a mixed weekend 👇

The 1s suffered a 3-wicket defeat away to Potters Bar despite a strong bowling effort. Batting first, Hertford found themselves 49-4 before a 68-run partnership between Mikedis and Pavey steadied the innings. Mikedis produced 65 while Pavey anchored the innings with 44*. Potters Bar made a flying start in reply, with Parkes and Hawkins putting on 90. Hertford fought back through Eustance (2-60) and T.Orchard, who bowled superbly to take 3-12, but Potters Bar eventually reached their target for the loss of 7 wickets.

The 2s secured an excellent 6-run victory over Eversholt. Hertford made a solid start after being put into bat, with Mercer (44) and Price (31) putting on 70 for the 1st wicket. After a couple of quick wickets, Joyce took control, producing an unbeaten 58 while useful contributions from S.Ruskin, C.Abell and S.Clarke helped Hertford reach 214-7. At one stage, Eversholt looked well placed in the chase, however, Hertford's bowlers kept chipping away. Williams and Underdown both took 3 wickets and the pressure eventually told as Eversholt were bowled out for 208 to give Hertford a 6-run victory.

The 3s produced a dominant performance to secure a 125-run victory over Shenley Village. Batting first, Hertford posted 273-6 from their 50. Read was the star of the innings, falling just 6 runs short of a well-deserved century after making an excellent 94. Read shared partnerships throughout, first with C.Ives (29) and then G.Rideout (27), before Marnoch added 24. Shenley's chase never got going as Gardner, Beardsley, C.Ives and Marnoch all claimed 2 wickets to bowl Shenley out for 148.

The 4s fell to a 6-wicket defeat against Holtwhites-Trinibis despite posting 205-4. Hertford's innings was built around an excellent partnership between Page and Wolton. Page made 50 before Wolton hit 16 fours in an excellent 76 from 96 balls. The visitors' chase got off to a steady start before Wolton claimed 2 wickets to keep Hertford in the contest. Perkins and Jackson also struck, but Holtwhites remained in control thanks to a superb innings from Reis. Holtwhites ultimately reached their target 6-down.

4 runs short of 4 from 4. Recapping on Saturday's men's league fixtures 👇

The 1s produced an excellent all-round performance to secure a convincing 49-run victory over league-contenders, West Herts. Batting first, Hertford posted 255-8 from their 60 overs. Cavener got the innings moving with 45 before Eustance and Pavey took control of the middle and latter stages. Eustance struck 55 while Pavey provided acceleration with an excellent 54 from just 47 balls, including 3 sixes. In reply, West Herts made a solid start but Hertford's bowlers gradually took control. Eustance produced a superb spell of 6-59 from 19.1 overs while Braans claimed 4-80.

A dominant performance from the 2s saw them secure a comprehensive 152-run victory over Bishop's Stortford. Batting first, Hertford posted an imposing 300-7 from their 50 overs. Mercer led the way with 67 while Joyce and F.Ruskin both contributed 52. Underdown added a brisk 30 from 28 balls before T.Orchard provided further momentum with 31 from 30. With 300 on the board, Hertford's bowlers produced a superb display. T.Orchard was the pick of the attack, taking 4-36, while Underdown was outstanding with 3-6 from just 4 overs. Stortford were eventually dismissed for just 148.

The 3s produced a clinical performance to secure a stunning 10-wicket victory over Langleybury. Put into bat, Langleybury struggled against a relentless Hertford bowling attack and were bowled out for just 47. Duke led the charge with a superb 6-24 from 10 overs, while Beardsley took 3-18. The chase was a formality, with Read unbeaten on 19 and Carter unbeaten on 16 as Hertford reached 50-0 in just 8.4 overs.

The 4s came agonisingly close to completing a successful chase against Wheathampstead, eventually falling 4 runs short. Wheathampstead were bowled out for 167 with Coleman particularly impressive, conceding just 8 runs from 8 overs while taking a wicket. Amos claimed 2-23 while Wolton took 2-22. Chasing 168 for victory, Hertford battled hard. Wolton made 28, while Riddle anchored the middle order with a valuable 30. Amos added a quickfire 26 to keep the chase alive but Hertford ultimately fell agonisingly just 4 runs short.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Anita Arnold on 29 July, just one day after her 87th birthday.

Anita, a club Vice President for many years, and her late husband Fred (former player and President), first came to the club in 1967 from Addiscombe, Surrey. Not only did Anita organise and prepare teas and cater for County games for 30 years, she always took a really keen interest in the club and all those associated with it up until her last visit in May.

The funeral is to be held at Woollensbrook Crematorium, Hoddesdon on Tuesday 25 August at 2.30pm and to meet afterwards at the cricket club to celebrate her life. Dress code – bright, colourful and summery.

We extend our sincere condolences to her two daughters, Lesley and Virginia, and their families.

A fine lady who will be greatly missed.
