Enhanced Practice: Lower Back | Sunday 20 September
I've suffered from back pain since the age of 8. I remember it starting – I'd feel uncomfortable after standing for too long, and it always hurt to carry a bag. My parents were great - they listened to me and tried to help- I had scans, went to an osteopath and tried Alexander Technique. The pain got worse as I got older, especially around my menstrual cycle, and nothing seemed to help.
When I was 16 I went to a yoga class. It was the first time I'd really felt like I could have some agency over managing the pain in my back. I started practising at home, because it was such a relief.
At the age 20 I discovered Iyengar yoga- this was a pivotal moment because the method was so clear and concise- I was really able to reduce and manage the pain in a consistent way, and to begin to understand what worked and why.
Part of what I love about teaching is being able to share from my personal experience. Everyone is different, but we have at our fingertips a unique method that allows us to listen deeply to our body and to meet it with compassion and confidence- even when it's complaining.
The photographs here offer a glimpse of this approach in practice – how adjustments and props can help us to explore an asana, creating space, stability and lightness.
If you've ever suffered from back pain, or if you want to learn some preventative techniques, come along to this workshop which will be designed to give you some practical take-aways.
Sunday 20 September | 10am–1pm
The Lower Back Workshop is suitable for students with 6+ months of regular Iyengar yoga practice.
Make a day of it: students with 18+ months of regular class attendance can also stay on for an afternoon of yoga philosophy, mantra, restorative āsana and prāṇāyāma. A light lunch is included with either booking option.
Think space, stability, lightness.
