It’s a Two for Tuesday special with some 10K race success to shout about! 🤩

First up, Chris Smart is living the Mediterranean dream in Crete 🇬🇷

Chris Smart embraced the heat in Crete and took on the Rethymno 10k, finishing 15th overall and first V60. 🥇
The festival of running featured fantastic hospitality from an army of volunteers, with a route winding through the historic old town and along the stunning promenade. Nicely done, Chris 😎 We hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Not quite sunny Greece, we journeyed over to the Barry 10K for their annual 10K Race! Congratulations to John, Kerry, and Caroline for their Barry-tastic finish times…

🏖️John Noonan 01:22:10
🏖️Kerry Wyatt 56:17 PB 🔔

Huge well done! 👏🏻

Such sad news. Sending our deepest sympathies to Tony’s family and friends 🤍

Tony Williams

1937 - 2026.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tony Williams, one of the most influential and dedicated figures in the history of Hereford & County Athletics Club, the Herefordshire Athletics Association, and county athletics as a whole.

Tony’s involvement in the sport spanned more than 60 years. A talented middle‑distance runner in his early years, He began running himself in 1945 and, after starting out as a member of Pontrilas AC, he joined Hereford & County Athletics Club and he went on to serve the club and county in almost every role imaginable. His lifelong passion for athletics and his unwavering commitment to supporting young athletes shaped the sport in Herefordshire for generations. He took immense pride in seeing athletes from the county progress to national and international level.

Tony played a pivotal role in establishing the Herefordshire Cross Country League, and he continued to attend fixtures and present awards well into recent years. He also became a qualified timekeeper and track judge, dedicating countless hours to officiating and supporting competitions across the county.

One of Tony’s greatest legacies is the existence of the athletics track in Hereford. In 1964, alongside a small group of volunteers, he spent years digging run‑ups, throwing areas and pits by hand, creating the county’s first athletics track and enabling the first County Championships in 1975. In 1988, Tony was again at the forefront of developing the track we know today. During the recent campaign to save the facility, many reflected that without Tony’s early drive and determination, there may never have been a track to protect.

In 2023, Tony’s extraordinary service was formally recognised at the England Athletics Volunteer Awards, a fitting tribute to a man whose dedication has left an indelible mark on county athletics and our sport.

We extend our deepest condolences to Tony’s family and friends. We are profoundly grateful for everything he gave to our sport, our athletes and our community. His legacy will continue to inspire us for many years to come.

The team achieved Big milestones and bigger mountains on Saturday! ✨

We had Bronwen Tyler Jones get her 2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣th parkrun 👏🏻 Shoutout to Zoe Johns and David Bridgewater who both got new PBs! 🏆 And, Gerald Gobey earned his 🔟th volunteer credit! 🦺
It was great to see so many of you volunteering at Hereford parkrun too! 🧡

Over in the mountains we had Simon Mehigan, Martin Carter, and Cerid Carter take on the Big Black Mountains Challenge ⛰️⛰️⛰️ Simon conquered the 31K route whilst father daughter duo Martin & Cerid stormed the 21K!

Not forgetting our international parkrun tourist Tori who completed New Farm parkrun in Australia 🇦🇺

A Saturday well spent! Great stuff, everyone 🙌🏼

Looking for some Friday night time reading? Then give Martin’s fantastic race report a gander ⬇️

RHAYDER 5K (ISH)

“This was the official name of the race so full credit to the organisers for being completely honest that it might or might not be exactly 5K 🙂 I can confirm that it was more as I went through 5K in 19:39 and then carried on to the finish. So glad I didn’t start my sprint too early! 🤣

It was lovely and sunny when I left Brilley but as I approached the Elan Valley I could see storm clouds gathering. As the start drew nearer the storm kicked off 🌧️ This is the first time I have stood on a start line physically shivering whilst watching my fingers turn blue 😮 Everyone else felt the same as we huddled together like penguins trying to keep warm🐧

The course was about 1 third on tarmac and 2 thirds on trails which were now wet and slippery so absolutely no consensus on the best shoe choice.

The different terrain, some steep downhill sections and windy conditions resulted in my pace being all over the place. It actually ranged from 4:58 to 6:57!!!!!

There was a great atmosphere, fantastic post race refreshments and all the marshals were brilliant 👍 This was the first race for the Rhayader Couch to 5K Group 🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️ and every single one of them was presented with a special certificate for their achievement 🙌

I finished 13TH overall and was 1ST in the MV55-64 category winning a bottle of wine🥇”

Winner, winner! White wine for dinner! 🥂
