Why jean length matters in Western riding – and why we let you try before you buy 🤠

For Western riding, jeans should typically be 2–4 inches longer than a normal trouser inseam. The ideal length means the hem sits ¼–½ inch above the ground when standing in boots, allowing the denim to stack neatly over the boot.

That extra length matters because:
✔ Jeans ride up when you sit in a Western saddle
✔ Proper coverage prevents rubbing and exposed boot shafts
✔ The classic Western look relies on stacking, not ankle-length denim
✔ In competition settings, visible boot shafts are often frowned upon

Try it properly at The Tack Shack at Valley View Ranch

• Try jeans with boots on
• Sit in a Western saddle to see how the leg lifts in real riding position
• Check comfort, coverage, and stack before buying

If they look perfect barefoot, they’re usually too short for riding.

Style notes 👢
There’s a growing trend, particularly for ladies, to show off western boots with skinny jeans tucked in – there’s such a fantastic range of beautiful boots available to wear, this is a great look out of the saddle or for relaxed riding.

For competition riding, we recommend:
✔ Jeans worn over boots and/or fringed chaps over the top

This creates a classic, professional Western finish, maintains clean lines in the saddle, and stays show-ring appropriate.
