Your training plan is missing a key variable. 🔬

Watts. HRV. TSS. Macros. Sleep scores. 1RM. Breath Rate etc.

We track everything, and that rigour does matter. But there’s one metric that doesn’t show up in your training diary or on your headunit, and it might be the most important one of all.

How much do you actually enjoy this?

Chronic stresses without both physiological and psychological recovery is a fast track to burnout, suppressed motivation, and worse performance. The science on this is clear, mental fatigue directly impairs physical output.

So yes; do the structured blocks, nail the nutrition, hit the gym, but also?

Ride with your mates, find a new road, chase a KOM for no reason other than the thrill of it, sit outside a café with a coffee and forget about your power numbers for an hour.

That’s not slacking, that’s training the variable most athletes neglect.

Your long-term performance isn’t just built in the intervals, it’s built in the moments that remind you why you started. 🚴

❌ Why “No Pain, No Gain” will hold you back

If you’re finishing every single session feeling completely wrecked, that’s not a badge of honour, it’s a red flag.

Constantly pushing at maximum intensity means you’re accumulating chronic training stress without giving your body the chance to recovery and adapt.

Over time, this leads to dysfunctional overreaching or overtraining: persistent fatigue, stalled progress, disrupted sleep, and a body that starts to work against you rather than for you.

Here’s the truth: adaptation doesn’t happen during the hard session. It happens in the recovery that follows.

Smart training is a balance:

✅ Structured stress and rest: hard days and easier days combined to optimise adaptations
✅ Proper fuelling: your body needs enough, and the right, energy to perform and repair. Carbs, protein, and fats
✅ Hydration: dehydrated sessions amplify fatigue; better hydration is achieved with carbs and salt mixed in water
✅ Quality sleep: where the biggest recovery gains are made, and well worth focussing on

Not every ride should hurt. Rest days, easier Zone 2 sessions, and recovery rides aren’t wasted; they’re part of the plan. The athletes who can train consistently over years are the ones who respect this balance.

Do you want to ride faster, feel stronger, and enjoy the process? Stop glorifying suffering and start training with intention.

📩 Drop us a comment or message if you want to find out what a structured, balanced training plan looks like for you.

Performance isn’t luck; it’s science, structure, and the right coach behind you.

At ATP Performance, we coach riders to become the best version of themselves. Our coached riders have delivered dozens of wins, countless PBs, and breakthrough performances across road, criteriums, gravel, track, and time trial events.

Behind every plan, every session, every message, is a team of professionally qualified coaches and sports scientists who have raced at the sharp end themselves. They know the difference between training data and race-day reality, and they use both to build you a programme that works for you.

Using advanced data analysis, bespoke power profiling, and up-to-date sports science, we create individualised coaching plans built around the moments that matter in racing: staying with the front group over a climb, finding another gear in a race-winning sprint, or chasing that next TT personal best.

Off the bike, targeted strength and conditioning work builds the resilience and raw power that cycling sessions alone can’t deliver, so when it counts, you’re ready.

Train smarter. Race faster. Win more.

• Professionally qualified, race-experienced coaches - not just algorithms
• Proven race results at every level
• Science-based, data-driven, individual-focussed coaching

Higher carbohydrate intake has played a major role in the increase in race speeds at both professional and amateur level. Nutrition brands now promote 1:0.8 glucose:fructose products that allow athletes to consume 120g/hr and beyond. At the pro level, some riders reportedly push close to 200g/hr during the hardest stages. But just because the pros do it does not mean everyone needs to.

Professional riders work at far higher power outputs and therefore use far more energy. Tadej Pogačar has mentioned his Zone 2 power is around 340W. Assuming this is below LT1 and around 50% carbohydrate usage, that equates to roughly 153g of carbs per hour.

Compare that to an amateur riding at 170W in Zone 2. They may only use around 76g/hr. Exact numbers vary between individuals, but it highlights the huge difference in energy demand.

We also store around 300 to 400g of muscle glycogen, which helps fuel training. Unless you are training multiple hours every day, racing frequently, or doing large volumes of intensity, you likely do not need the same carbohydrate intake as pros riding 25+ hours a week or racing Grand Tours.

Nutrition should be tailored to your own workload and recovery needs. Eat enough to fuel the work and recover properly, rather than simply copying professional riders.

The same applies to carbohydrate ratios. The body is generally limited to around 60g/hr of glucose absorption, which is why fructose is added for higher intakes. If you only need 60g/hr, predominantly glucose is fine. Around 90g/hr usually suits a 2:1 glucose:fructose mix, while 1:0.8 is mainly useful for very high intakes beyond that.

Fuel for the work required, not just what the pros are doing.
