RACE REPORT......Heptonstall Festival Fell Race 2026 – Max and Issy – brother and sister act stealing the show for Calder Valley !!!
Thanks to everyone who turned out at our14th Festival Race – 88 runners lined up on a humid cobbled start line, refreshingly bathed in light drizzle, under cloudy skies – full of Heptonstall energy, our spirits weren’t dampened – after a traditional spectacular Festival send off, the dreary day was dazzlingly lit up by some astonishing running - Max Wharton of Calder Valley ( and Heptonstall) put in a scorching performance to arrive first home (literally – the finish line is in his back garden) completing the 6 miles and 1600 feet of ascent in an awesome 46.14 (smashing Joe Baxter’s 2018 course record by 25 seconds), followed by Calder Valley club mate (2023 winner), Stephen Hall (52.39), and unattached Brighouse orienteer David Roome (53.13). Not to be upstaged – Max’s sister, Issy Wharton, made it a Wharton family (and Calder Valley) double act as Issy crossed the line as first woman in 58:52 – huge congratulations to Max and Issy on a remarkable brother and sister clean sweep! York University’s Freya Gibson was 2nd woman (1.09:49), closely followed by Rebecca Patrick (1:10:07) of Todmorden Harriers. Calder Valley’s men (Max Wharton, Stephen Hall, Andy Collier) were the first male team, whilst Calder Valley ladies capped off a sparkling day for the red white hoops, by taking the women’s team prize (Issy Wharton, Sophie Cunningham, Charlotte Wetton). Max and Issy’s dad (and fellow race organiser) slightly let the side down, missing winning the V60 category by 18 seconds, finishing just 1 place behind V60 winner Steve Webb of Bingley Harriers. Congratulations to Mark nevertheless on his fell running family escapades –the race must have made for an interesting mealtime that evening. We loved The Nightjar beers on the outdoor pump at the finish funnel, and it was great to see almost every single category winner stay for the post-race presentations. We were really grateful to Sportsshoes.com for the donation of vouchers - great prizes for some well-deserved runs on a super tough Category A route. We soon drained the cask of Nightjar Brew Co ale generously donated by the brewers based in Mytholmroyd. Many of us then spent the rest of the day taking in the live bands, street food, beer tents and general feel good vibes at the festival. Huge thanks to all of our marshals, HQ team, sweeper, landowners, and sponsors- super slick team work!- Particular thanks to the marshal’s this year – who were drenched from start to finish – but remained cheerful and fantastically supportive as runners passed their often windy and exposed positions. Hope everyone enjoyed their day out in Heptonstall- we’re missing you already! Can’t wait to see you at our 2027 races
