A new report by Women in Sport, funded by Sport England, has found that girls begin to disengage in sport and exercise in their teenage years. It studied more than 4,000 girls and boys and found that 43% of girls disengage from sport and exercise in their teens compared to boys.

Some of the barriers include:
Feeling judged (61%)
Lack of self-belief (50%)
Pressures of schoolwork (41%)
Don’t feel safe exercising outside (38%)

My thoughts: girls are internalising the body perfection images they see everywhere, as well as the 'norms' relating to what young women should/should not be doing.

Do we really need elite sport coaches to tell us what children 'need' in life and how sport can be used as a competitive socialising tool? 🙄 The majority of people I speak to about their experiences of PE talk about how traumatised they were on Sports Day. Sports Day should be a reflection of our inclusive, student-centred practice that we maintain all year round; it should not symbolise everything ugly that we know goes on with elitist PE practices. Competition is only 'right' for our children when designed by a teacher who knows their students well, and a teacher who focuses on the holistic development of every single child.

Competitive sports hold lots of appeal, but is your child ready to take on the challenge? Ask yourself questions before your kids enroll.
