Henley Ladies Secure First 2026 Winter League Victory đŸ’ȘđŸŒ

Henley Ladies recorded a strong 3-1 win over Wokingham in freezing but sunny conditions, with temperatures hovering around 3°C. The fixture was only possible thanks to the club’s newly built artificial clay courts, which proved invaluable on a weekend when icy hard courts forced the men’s fixture to be cancelled. The new surface played a key role in ensuring competitive, high-quality tennis could go ahead safely in mid-winter.

& .miles_03 opened the match with a hard-fought win against Wokingham’s first pair, taking it 6-2, 5-7 before edging the deciding tie-break 1-0. They followed this with another impressive performance, recovering well after losing the first set 2-6 to take the second 6-4 and once again showing composure to win the deciding tie-break 1-0.

& made a dominant start against Wokingham’s second pair, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. They were unable to repeat that form in their second match, however, losing 1-6, 3-6 to Wokingham’s top pairing.

With three rubbers won to one, Henley secured the overall victory in testing winter conditions, highlighting both their resilience and the value of the new clay courts. Players from both teams were then happy to warm up with a hot cup of tea and enjoy a delicious match tea kindly provided by the home team, rounding off an excellent and well-hosted afternoon of tennis.

Henley Berks 2 Tie Match at Home Against Binfield Tennis Association 2. The match was played at home, on 16/11/2025 in the Berkshire Dunlop Winter League, Division 7, West.

After three and a half hours on court, during the post-match refreshments, it emerged how close this match had been - at two rubbers each and five sets each , the game count was revealed to be 39 to Henley and 39 to Binfield.
Much earlier Rob and Chris, in his debut for the Berks 2s, were slow to get going and went down 1 - 6, 2 - 6 to Binfield’s first pair.

Meanwhile Jeremy and Paul saw off the Binfield 2nd pair 6 - 2, 7 - 5. All square after round 1. In the second round rubbers, Jeremy and Paul lost narrowly after a championship tie break to Binfield’s first pair (6 - 2, 4 - 6, 0 - 1). In the final rubber Rob and Chris fought back from one set down to take the second set and the following championship tie break to square the match (6 - 7, 6 - 4, 1 - 0). However, Berkshire rules dictate that points cannot be shared equally in drawn matches.

The final outcome is likely to be determined in a further championship tie break to take place in the near future.

Henley’s “fab four” – Levi McAndrew-Brown, Jess Craig, Ana Roberts Banciu, and James Cudd – faced a strong Shinfield Mixed 2 side at home. The atmosphere was electric, and the matches were some of the most competitive of the season, with every single rubber going to a championship tiebreak – a rare and thrilling occurrence!

Ana & James led the charge, battling hard against Shinfield’s big-hitting first pair. After splitting sets (4–6, 6–1), they just missed out in the deciding tiebreak. Their second match was heartbreakingly close too, with match point at 9–8 in the tiebreak before narrowly losing (2–6, 6–3, lost tiebreak).

Meanwhile, Levi and Jess fell just short against Shinfield’s second pair (3–6, 6–4, lost tiebreak), but they turned things around brilliantly in their next match. Digging deep and showing great resilience, they defeated the visitors’ first pair 6–4, 2–6, and clinched the championship tiebreak in style.

Although the final score was a 1–3 loss to Henley, the team could hold their heads high after such a fiercely contested fixture. One highlight came when Jess described one opponent as “the friendliest and most polite player” she’d ever faced – a true reflection of the spirit of the day.

Over at Bradfield Tennis Centre, Henley’s Women’s Doubles team faced challenging conditions on real clay courts strewn with autumn leaves. Despite the tricky footing, both pairs produced some quality tennis.

Pair 1 – Ana Roberts Banciu & Pam Saker – fought hard against a very strong first Bradfield pair, with long rallies and close games that made the 2–6, 2–6 scoreline seem harsh. Against Bradfield’s second pair, they stormed through the first set 6–2 before being pegged back 3–6 in the second. A tense deciding tiebreak saw Henley narrowly miss out after leading 7–5, ending in a heartbreaking defeat.

It was a debut outing for Rowan Hampson, partnering Jess Craig as Pair 2, and the duo showed real promise. After a tough start against Bradfield’s second pair (1–6, 4–6), they grew in confidence throughout the day. Their determination paid off in their second match: after losing the first set to Bradfield’s top pair, they bounced back superbly to take the second 6–2 and win the deciding tiebreak in style – a fantastic result on debut.
