Hi, welcome to the Centre for Horseback Combat page! Our centre is a fully licensed and insured centre of excellence teaching Horseback Archery, Cossack Trick Riding, Stunt courses and our unique Rider Confidence course developed by Karl Greenwood. The centre is based on a beautiful 2000 acre country estate where we live and work out of 18th century stables near Hemel Hempstead. We were t

he first dedicated centre to offer licensed and insured Horseback archery courses in the UK. We are also affiliated to The World Horseback Archery Federation in South Korea where we compete at The World Championships. We are also the only school affiliated to The International Equestrian Dzhigitovka Federation in Moscow and holding qualifications to offer true Cossack Trick Riding lessons here and are the home of Team GB who compete annually in Russia at The World Dzhigitovka Championships. Ever watched a historic movie and thought, “I wish I could do that”? Now is your chance!

Join us for an epic, adrenaline-fueled, two-day weekend course on August 22nd & 23rd, 2026 at our stunning, historic country estate.
This is the ultimate Horseback Combat experience, and it couldn't have a more perfect backdrop.

Here is what we have lined up for an unforgettable weekend:

🗡️ What You’ll Learn
We will be breaking the weekend down into structured, progressive sections covering:
Cossack Lances
Throwing Knives
Shashka Swords (Note: For maximum safety, sword work is strictly on the ground and on our wooden horse!)
Trick Riding – For those brave enough to try! (Completely optional—you can absolutely skip the tricks and still enjoy the full combat course!)

🌟 Why This Course is Unique

This isn't your average riding clinic. We are proudly taught by the British Dzhigitovka and Trick Riding Association and affiliated with the International Equestrian Dzhigitovka Federation.
You will genuinely hone your warrior skills, share plenty of laughs, and feel like you've stepped right onto a movie set.

🎭 Dress Code: Warrior costumes are entirely optional. However, if you've been looking for an excuse to wear a costume to lunch, we won't judge.

🏡 Accommodation & Amenities

Stay On-Site: You are welcome to bring a campervan to park in our car park, or even pitch a tent right in the field!

Local B&Bs: Available nearby if you prefer a bit more luxury after a day of battle.

Food & Drink: Complementary teas, coffees, herbal teas, and biscuits are provided throughout the weekend.

The Local: There is a fantastic local pub just a two-minute walk across our car park for evening unwinding.

🐴 Join our half day Confidence for Kids course which teaches children aged 8 - 14 years and also we teach you, the parent or carer how to deal with horse behaviours, how to prevent issues in the first place, how to stay on and also how to fall off and avoid injuries

We cover horsemanship and training

Rider psychology and we refine the fun in riding

This course is suitable for all levels of rider from absolute beginners to advanced

This course is unique in the world!! You’ll not find this anywhere else

We had fun on our 2 day weekend Horseback Combat weekend

Shooting guns, throwing knives and spinning lances from Horseback

This course is for experienced riders happy to stand up in their stirrups, ride with reins in one hand or no hands, and being balanced and confident.
We are the only centre with coaching qualifications from the IEDF to teach this sport and have coached and competed since 2016 at The World Dzhigitovka Championships on Russia.

This photo was taken 16 years ago when we had opened our school

When we wanted to start Horseback Archery teaching in the UK we couldn’t find any insurance companies willing to correctly insurance this skill to teach the general public

It took around 2 years to get insured to open a school for Horseback Archery

We created the first licensed and correctly insured school for Horseback Archery in the UK

There were a couple of little groups who did a few sessions here and there but they had no license or correct insurance

We quickly realised if this sport was to progress and grow it needed to be done safely, correctly and legally

Many forget what efforts had to go in for now many many schools to open and this sport to be were it now is

We have taught over 6500 riders Horseback Archery safely, professionally and using our super well trained horses

I thank all my horses - some that are now no longer with us for their work and for being brilliant and helping so many riders enjoy this sport and feel safe and confident

One of which is in this photo, my heart horse Niagara who taught so many people Horseback Archery in his lifetime

I’m going to have to sell my 3 Kune Kune piggies. They are siblings and must stay together!

1 boy whose castrated and 2 sisters

They are 3 years old now and super friendly can sit on command and love belly rubs

I’ve had them from piglets

They can only go to a 5 star loving home where they will have space and can have lots of love 🥰🥰
