After 60 remarkable years, it is with great sadness that Seahawk Gliding Club has made the difficult decision to disband. Over six decades, the club has been shaped by the dedication, friendship, and tireless efforts of countless members who gave their time, skill, and passion to keep the spirit of gliding alive and support service gliding for generations. Seahawk was far more than a club; it was a community built on shared experiences, camaraderie, and a love of flight. While this chapter comes to an end, the memories, achievements, and lasting impact of all those involved will continue to be remembered with pride and gratitude. Thank you to all the clubs, organisations, Gliding, Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose and members that have supported us over the years.

Welcome back Rob and welcome to the club Discus K9!

Merlin Mk2 pilot and club member Lt Rob H qualified as a British Gliding Association Instructor in Aug last year between leaving 814 NAS and his appointment for an Op Tour in the Middle East. Now back from Bahrain he is due to join 820 NAS but in the meantime is getting back up to speed as a glider pilot and instructor with the club.
He is pictured about to depart on his first flight the Seahawk Gliding Club's new advanced cross country, single seat Discus B glider which he will be flying in the Inter Service Gliding Championship this summer at RAF Keevil. All then members of the club are delighted with the Discus and most grateful to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RN&RMC) and RN Sports Lottery for their generous grant funding, without which, the procurement of the Discus would not have been possible. They also wish Rob and the rest of the Navy Squad every success in this year's Inters Services! Glide Navy!

Leading Air Engineering Technician Molly Ellis has embarked on a career fixing the Royal Navy’s submarine-hunting helicopters.

The 21 from Chester said she wanted a practical job where she was learning new skills every day.

“I like getting hands-on and figuring out how stuff works,” she said. “That’s what for me, being an engineer is all about.”

She currently serves with 824 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Culdrose while she completes her training to qualify for frontline duties. After that she’ll be able to go to sea.

“I’ve got one more year of my training to go. In this role, I am a supervisor for a team working on an aircraft,” she added.

“One of my favourite things is working during our night watches. I was out marshalling an aircraft one night, with my glow sticks, and the stars were out and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. It was beautiful.”

LAET Ellis said an extra benefit of being in the navy is the range of activities on offer – she’s been surfing in Portugal, skiing in the Alps and in the spring will go gliding in Wales.

All change at the top: Commander Rob O’Kane (left) has handed over command of the Merlin Helicopter Force to Commander Aidan Riley (right) today.

Cdr Riley, who lives in Truro, is a former senior observer of 829 and 824 naval air squadrons and has worked on behalf of Merlin Helicopter Force at Navy Command. He returns to RNAS Culdrose HQ from a position at the Ministry of Defence in London.

He said: “Never has there been a more important time in recent history than now for the Merlin Helicopter Force. In these uncertain times, our role in protecting the peace and stability in the world is vital.
“I am also to be back at Culdrose working with brilliant people, including our engineers. The support they give the force is incredible and it’s all down to their professionalism and hard work.”

Known by his job title as ‘Commander Merlin’, Cdr Riley is now responsible for the Royal Navy’s three Merlin Mk2 helicopter squadrons and their support departments.
