🏏DOWN YOUR WAY Duncombe Park Cricket Club🏏

Set on the edge of the North York Moors, with the rolling parkland of Duncombe Park stretching out around it, Duncombe Park Cricket Club is one of those places where cricket feels woven into the landscape itself. There are few more picturesque settings in the region — and fewer clubs where the connection between ground, town and community feels quite so strong.

Helmsley is a place that naturally draws people in. A proper market town, full of character, history and charm, it sits as a gateway to the moors and carries a steady rhythm of locals, walkers and visitors throughout the year. But the more time you spend there, the more layers you begin to notice.

At its heart is a bustling market square — a focal point that has served the town for centuries. Independent shops, traditional pubs and welcoming cafés line the streets, giving Helmsley a warmth that feels both timeless and lived-in. It’s the sort of place where people still stop and chat, where familiar faces are part of daily life, and where visitors quickly feel at home.

History runs deep through the town. The imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle stand as a reminder of centuries gone by, while nearby, the grand Duncombe Park estate adds another layer of heritage and prestige. The town has evolved over time, but it has done so without losing its identity — something that becomes clear the moment you arrive.

Helmsley’s location is a huge part of its appeal. Sitting on the fringe of the North York Moors National Park, it acts as a natural starting point for exploring one of the country’s most beautiful landscapes. Walkers, cyclists and nature lovers pass through regularly, bringing a quiet energy that blends seamlessly with the town’s slower pace of life.

There’s also a strong sense of community underpinning everything. Events, local businesses and clubs all play their part in keeping the town vibrant year-round. It’s not just a place people visit — it’s a place people invest in, care about, and take pride in.

Duncombe Park CC sits right at the heart of that setting. The ground itself, framed by trees and open skies, has a timeless quality — the sort of place where the game feels as it should, unhurried and steeped in tradition. Whether it’s the sound of leather on willow echoing across the park or the sight of families gathered along the boundary, there’s something unmistakably special about cricket here.

But like so many clubs, it’s not just about the scenery. Duncombe Park is a club built on people — on volunteers, players, supporters and a wider community that values having a cricket club at its centre. Matchdays bring together a mix of generations, from juniors finding their feet in the game to experienced players who’ve spent years representing the club.

There’s a quiet pride about Duncombe Park CC. It doesn’t shout for attention, but those who know it understand its importance — both as a cricket club and as part of the fabric of Helmsley. In towns like this, clubs are more than just teams; they are meeting points, traditions and shared experiences that carry from one generation to the next.

In many ways, Duncombe Park and Helmsley mirror each other perfectly. Both are rooted in history, surrounded by natural beauty, and defined by a strong sense of community. Together, they offer a reminder of what grassroots cricket is really about — not just results or leagues, but place, people and the simple enjoyment of the game.

Thank you for your continued hard work both on and off the field, Bev! Here's to season 2026.

📣PEOPLE BEHIND CRICKET 📣

Bev Nicholson – Duncombe Park Cricket Club , Yorkshire County Cricket Club (Official), and England Cricket

Bev Nicholson has given a lifetime to cricket, contributing to the game as an England international, a long-serving county player and, today, as one of the key volunteers helping grassroots cricket thrive in North Yorkshire.

A talented all-rounder, Bev represented England women's cricket team in One Day Internationals during the late 1990s. She was also part of England’s squad for the 1997 Women's Cricket World Cup, representing her country on the global stage.

Alongside her international appearances, Bev enjoyed a long and successful domestic career with Yorkshire Women, where she played for more than a decade. As a right-handed batter and right-arm medium-pace bowler, she made more than sixty appearances in List-A cricket, contributing both runs and wickets for the county side.

Like many people who truly love the game, Bev’s involvement in cricket did not end when her representative career slowed down. She has continued playing club cricket and remains an active figure on the field.

Away from the boundary rope, Bev is one of the driving forces behind Duncombe Park Cricket Club in Helmsley. As club secretary she plays a central role in the day-to-day running of the club, coordinating administration, fixtures, communication and safeguarding responsibilities. In many ways she represents the organisational heartbeat that keeps a community club functioning week after week.

Her influence extends well beyond her own club. Bev is a valued member of the Management Board of the Yorkshire Premier League North, where she contributes to the development and governance of league cricket across the region. She has also been heavily involved in the growth of the women’s game, serving as secretary of the Yorkshire Women and Girls Cricket League and helping to expand participation opportunities for women and girls.

Equally important is her work with young cricketers. Bev is heavily involved in coaching and supporting junior players across the Scarborough and Ryedale area, helping introduce the game to new generations and nurturing young talent at grassroots level.

From representing England on the international stage to coaching juniors and helping run the local game, Bev Nicholson’s contribution to cricket spans the entire spectrum. Her story perfectly reflects what People Behind Cricket is all about — individuals whose passion and dedication ensure that the game continues to flourish for the generations that follow.

Only one team today as the 2nd XI game is cancelled.

A strong 1st XI host Clifton Alliance at Park, with 10 points on the line the boys are hoping to see as many familiar faces as possible on this bank holiday weekend. UTP.

Our Ladies team played in the YPLN Championship play -offs on Sunday at Beverley CC.

A 64 run victory in the first game against Sutton-On-Hull CC through a great knock of 46 not out from Caroline Aldous-Ball and a fantastic fielding display (4 run outs!) saw us take on Hessle in the final.

Hessle Cricket Club batted first and scored 123 courtesy of two good knocks of 45 and 46 from sisters Natalie and Karla Durham. The girls dragged it back with another good bowling and fielding display.
Despite 59 from skipper Bev Nicholson Park fell 18 runs short.

This was a great game played in excellent spirit and a top way to end our hardball season.

The team have had a brilliant first season playing hardball and they are developing with every game. Well done!!!!!!

🚨Team News 🚨

The teams are out, and boy do they look good.

In a Division four game for the ages, the (potential) title decider will be played at Stockton and Hopgrove. With Dave’s men prevailing in the reverse fixture Park field another strong team with the goal of headway at the top of Division 4.

The first team field another strong team with two debutants, and some other prominent names returning to the XI, including my personal favourite player at the club, the legend Scott (Hot Dog) Plowman. Hopefully the boys can kick on from a disappointing defeat at the hands of Acomb last week.

Go well boys! Let’s have 20 points. UTP.

The teams are outtttttt!

The two men’s teams are both flying high in their respective leagues. A win for the 1st team put them well in the mix for the tightly competed top spot in division 1. The 2nd XI keep winning with Stockton close on their heels, they look to close out the season atop Galtres division 4.

Big week boys, go well. UTP…
