I’m starting to get lots of messages regarding River Helmsdale Opening Day next Monday.

This is still a week away, and at the moment the weather forecast is only reliable hour by hour. This is the heaviest snowfall the village has seen in years, and the strath has significantly more.

Several roads remain closed, with access in places 4x4 only. There are snow drifts well over 8ft, making riverbanks dangerous, if not impossible, and at present there are no lay-bys available for parking.

At this stage, I honestly don’t know what conditions will be like next Monday, but what I can say is that there is a lot of snow. If these conditions continue into next week, we will need to reassess.

I’ll post further updates as soon as we have a clearer picture.

I’m only that “lassie with the tackle shop”… We will always welcome you at Glencoast / Helmsdale no matter what. And if I could predict the weather and river conditions, I’d be a rich lady 😜

I will post daily the river conditions and hopefully by Friday we will know how it’s looking!! 👀
