South Midlands Orienteering Club

South Midlands Orienteering Club Orienteering can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban parks and school playgrounds.

South Midlands Orienteering Club (SMOC) was founded in 1986 and has around 100 members living mostly in the Milton Keynes / Northampton / Buckingham / Bedford / Luton area. However the most challenging orienteering takes place in remote areas which have demanding terrain and fewer paths.

It’s that time of year again when we tackle the Greensands Ridge Relay!

2 teams, 13 runners, and a whole lot of hills!

There’s no medal, no t-shirt, no loos, but we do it for the team spirit and the pub at the end!!

Some happy competitors from yesterday’s Greensand Ridge Relay.

Back in May, a scorching bank holiday weekend was the setting for Canterbury’s orienteering events, where heat, tight timings and a controversial final control kept everyone on their toes. Read Rosie’s account of her family's visit to this city - link in comments.

Summer MapRun League
This Thursday 16 April will be the first in our series of events forming our Summer MapRun league. The events will be:

Thursday 16 April Aspley Heath (Church Road, Woburn Sands)
Thursday 7 May Aspley Heath (Woburn Road layby)
Thursday 4 June Aspley Heath (Bow Brickhill)
Thursday 23 July Aspley Heath (Longslade Lane Car Park)
Saturday 22 Aug Woolstone, Milton Keynes

There will be a short course (about 3km) and a long course (about 5km) at each event. We will be using the MapRun app technology but with the addition of control sites marked with a streamer of red & white tape.

The results of each of the events will count towards the overall standings, including the final event which will be part of our 40th Anniversary party on Saturday 22 August in Woolstone, Milton Keynes.

All the events will be free for club members but there will be a £2 fee for non-SMOCies.

This event is suitable for both beginners and more experienced orienteers. If you’ve not tried MapRun before, visit www.smoc.info/maprun.php to find out how it works. The courses will be available to download on the day. Find the MapRun event files in the UK/South Midlands /Summer MapRun Series 2026 folder on the MapRun App.

There will be help available for those new to MapRun and new to orienteering too.

Please DM if you have any questions or if you would like a printed map.
