...No, unfortunately I’m not running some kind of odd egg and steak giveaway.

There’s this odd perception that protein is exclusively for big hench dudes in the gym. Yes, undoubtedly high levels of protein will undoubtedly be helping these guys build muscle mass (- though overdoing it can also be damaging...but that’s for another day!) but in fact, we ALL need protein, whoever we are.

Did you know that protein exists in almost every tissue in the body? And that many of the amino acids that form the building blocks of proteins cannot even be made by the body so must be consumed in our diet?

Protein is not just essential for building muscle, but for the repair and regeneration of all tissue. In short, we need it to HEAL. So if you’ve had any sort of tissue trauma, from sunburn to caesarean section, you are doing your body a massive disservice if you aren’t getting enough protein.

Not to mention benefits to hair, skin and nails, if you find the aesthetic argument more persuasive.

Body building aside, the NHS recommends 0.75g of protein for each kg of body weight per day for adults, which averages to 45g for women and 55g for men.

No ground breakers here - you’ll find protein in meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts, legumes and quinoa, to name a few. As an example, you can find around 30g protein in 100g chicken breast, and around 6g in a large egg.

Added bonus - protein helps you feel fuller for longer, so can also regulate your hunger and aid fat loss, if that’s your aim.

Just. Eat. Real. Food. Enough said, right?

Those among us who enjoy control and regiment - and I include myself in this - find that calorie controlling works best with trackers, calculations and rigorous meal planning. If that’s you, I can help you with it. But, for the less gastronomically fastidious, I cannot advocate a better policy than JERF.

Make everything you eat from scratch - no jars, tins, ready meals and so on. You’ll know exactly what’s in it, down to every grain of salt and sugar. You can add what you need and exclude what you don’t.

Make wise choices and eat cleanly, and you’ll never have to wonder what the Ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate on the label is and what it’s doing to your insides.

With the JERF principle, you’re in control of making sure your body gets what it needs to function at its incredible best. Oh, and you may well lose some body fat too - happy days 🤗
