Brighton Rockers Roller Derby opposes the new EHRC guidance and stands with the trans community. Here's why and what to do about it.

The EHRC revised code of practice threatens to divide, confuse and stigmatise at a time when we need to come together in solidarity. Without action, it will make running inclusive sporting events impossible and put trans and gender non conforming people at risk.

Trans people belong in sport and public life. This shouldn't be even remotely controversial! At BRRD, we are proud that our league is made up of people from across the gender spectrum, and we will always have our trans skaters' backs.

This legislation is not fit for purpose and will not only exclude and isolate our trans siblings - it will also encourage draconian gender policing across the board. None of us are free until all of us are free. Stand with us in opposing and resisting this now. Here's how to take action:

It's Trans Day of Visibility 🏳️‍⚧️ A day to celebrate the accomplishments and victories of transgender and gender non-conforming people, while simultaneously raising awareness of the work that is still needed to combat the discrimination and violence they face.

At Brighton Rockers Roller Derby, we want to reiterate how important our team's trans and gender diverse skaters, officials, and fans are to us and the wider roller derby community. We stand with them against discrimination and will never accept laws that try to separate us.

It's worth noting that visibility is not always a good thing. Currently, trans people have been made extremely visible in sport discourse as many are demonised and excluded from participating.

We are proud that roller derby remains a sport where trans and cis athletes can compete together equally but we demand a reality where trans athletes are visible and celebrated because of their skills and effort.

Trans people belong in sport. We will continue to support, stand with, and fight for the rights, safety, and joy of the trans community.

A spot of housekeeping: There are gender neutral toilets available, a chill out room for those who would like a quieter space, and a Costa on site for food and beverages. We kindly ask that people don't bring alcohol in.
