One of the biggest differences I see between a pro and your average amateur golfer…

As your elite player works towards top of the backswing, they’re already starting to move into their lead side before the club has fully worked its way up.

The other golfer, tends to finish the backswing first… then shift.

Small difference, big impact to ball striking.

🔸 TRAIL ELBOW 🔸

An area I see a ton of golfers struggling with. The elbow working too high and deep into the backswing, causing a variety of downswing problems.

The “cackhanded drill” is a fantastic way to feel how that trail elbow need to fold and how the trail shoulder can externally rotate as you work into the backswing. Give it a try!

🔸 G O L F 🔸

This weekend marked my final competitive round as a professional… at least for a while.

I finished +3, tied for 11th, and although the result was respectable, it confirmed something I’ve been feeling for a long time.

The truth is, I haven’t enjoyed competing for quite a while…

I’m nowhere near the player I once was, and that’s not because I’ve lost the ability - it’s because I simply don’t have the time to practice and maintain my game to the standard I expect of myself. I find competition stressful and not enjoyable, purely a result of my game not being to the standard I know it can be.

I know some people believe that to be a great coach, you should still be competing. But do the very best coaches still do that? Many don’t. Their focus is on developing others, not chasing their own results.

Over the last few years, that’s where my passion has shifted. Seeing golfers improve, helping them develop as players, and watching students achieve things they never thought possible gives me far more satisfaction than writing my own scorecard.

So it’s time to put my full energy into coaching and building The J C Golf Academy even further. My goal is simple: help as many golfers as possible play better, enjoy the game more, and achieve things they didn’t think were possible.

This isn’t goodbye to competitive golf forever. I know I’ll be back one day when the time is right.
