There is a bit of effort required for Kelsey Frew just to get up to the main gym here at Think Fitness 4 Less. Mum Tania carries 17 year old Kelsey in her arms up the stairs and from machine to machine, as well as in and out of her wheelchair during her sessions with resident Personal Trainer Scott Weddle.
Kelsey has Cerebral Palsy, but she doesn’t let two flights of stairs get in the way of her getting her fitness fix! For the past 18 months, she has had a session with Scott once a week, and is reaping the benefits.
Kelsey took up the story. “I’ve experienced a massive difference in my strength and feel so much stronger. It’s a lot easier standing aided with sticks now. Initially my Dad (Willie) suggested the gym as a way of getting out of the house. I wasn’t sure but he got in touch with Scott anyway.”
“When I first met Scott and saw the gym, my first impressions were ‘how am I going to manage that?’, but I surprised myself! I enjoy the challenge of it all and look forward to it every week. If my session ever has to be cancelled, I feel so disappointed. I also enjoy the banter – Scott’s patter is better than my Dad’s!”
It’s humbling to watch Kelsey get carried around by her Mum, sometimes her Dad, always with a smile on her face. She comes into her own in the gym though, and she’s certainly game to get stuck in and accept whatever challenge comes her way. Mum Tania summed it by saying “Disability doesn’t stop you doing anything.”
Her PT Scott wasn’t short in his praise of Kelsey either. “I’m incredibly impressed with what Kelsey is able to do. She is so determined. She likes to do things her way, and she certainly doesn’t want anyone’s sympathy. Her strength both physical and mental is admiral, and I can’t help but be impressed by Mum Tania’s strength either! I look forward to our session every week as Kelsey’s such a positive person.”
After our chat I had the pleasure of presenting deserving Kelsey with her GYM HEROES trophy as well as a voucher for her to enjoy a wee treat at Johnstons Coffee Shop.
