In his book 'Arch' world renowned stone artist Andy Goldsworthy sheds some light on the origin of sheep stells!
He wrote: "I was told by one (Cumbrian) farmer that the original sheep stells were made by a man from Hawick, over in the Borders, who used to be a seafarer and had studied the ways of water and wind.
"He came up with the correct proportion of height to width to make a sheepfold that didn't collect snow.
"He couldn't tell me the name of the man. He told me that some of the folds worked and some of them didn't and that one in particular didn't work because it was too large."

The stell pictured stands approximately 4' 6" high and is finished off with traditional coverbands and a 'turf' or 'sod' top and also has throughbands every yard.
This stell is in remarkably good condition, it may be around 200 years old, for its age.
When in use it would provide shelter for around 100 ewes during adverse weather conditions.
The entrance to this stell is much tighter than normal being little more than 18" wide which would be a cozy squeeze even for the small South Country Cheviots Langburnshiels was famous for producing in its heyday!
