I have never been a "regular" gym goer, but I have always done a little bit, in an effort to improve my running. As we get older lifting weights becomes more important to counteract the normal muscle loss we experience with age. Your goals or reasons for starting to use weights will dictate what sort of weight lifting you need to do. I want to gain power and strength to run faster, so I need to lift heavy and do very few reps. Small hand weights and kettlebells aren't going to cut it and I knew I needed to move up and try lifting a bar. Never having used one before, I wasn't sure off the correct techniques, or even how to set a bar up. And I have to admit I felt a bit unsure of myself - I have never had a problem going into a gym before or using any of the other equipment, but moving into unknown territory was daunting. So I knew I needed help, and for the first time signed up for a PT session (thanks KJ Fitness for the fab session - highly recommend booking a session with Krista!!!) which certainly helped in giving my confidence a boost and to make sure that I knew what I needed to do.
Now I just need to get back into the gym ASAP before my confidence slips again and I forget what I learnt!
If you are feeling unsure and want to take on something new, then reach out and find an expert to help, it will really boost your confidence and help you to understand what you are trying to do.
