🦭Seals - AMAZING from afar!🦭

Can you help protect our seals? We've had A LOT of reports of the Chichester Harbour seals being disturbed recently, which sadly really impacts their survival chances. When they're resting they're digesting - and socialising, giving birth, feeding their pubs. They need that time on our mudflats undisturbed.

But when people get too close, or make too much noise they get scared. They may start by looking at you - that's time to back off. When they feel really threatened they move into the water - by which time you've already got far too close.

Instead, enjoy how amazing they are from afar - keep your distance, keep quiet and use binoculars. The best way to see them is on a trip with an expert guide!

Help us spread the word and help the seals get the rest they need to survive!

Can you help our seals get the rest they need?
🦭🦭🦭
Seeing the seals can be an incredible experience, and many operators including Chichester Harbour Conservancy run boat trips to the haul-out sites. But keeping a distance is so important for the health and wellbeing of these incredible animals.

Unfortunately, some visitors to the colony, by boat, kayak or paddleboard, have not understood the need to allow our seals to rest undisturbed. When we get too close, the seals’ fight or flight reflexes are triggered and the only place they feel safe is in the water.

Moonlight Paddle 🌙

Last night we set off into Langstone Harbour for our first LSC moonlit paddle.

We had it all - a glorious sunset, distant lightning, torrential warm rain and finally, the moon! Kayak, SUP and Canadian canoe all represented and all made it back to the club before last orders for a well-earned drink.

Look out for the sunset paddles or regular daytime outings in the club calendar.

💪🦪Volunteers needed!💪🦪
Be part of Chichester Harbour’s native oyster restoration story…
From 11-15 May we need an army of volunteers to scrub the 20,000 oysters that will be making their home
on Chichester Harbour’s new native oyster habitat.

The Solent Seascape Project oyster team led by Blue Marine Foundation will be hosting the events at the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Marine Sciences.

📅 When:
Monday 11 May to Friday 15 May. 9.30am – 4.30pm.
(With a lunchtime pizza party!)

📍 Location:
Institute of Marine Science, University of Portsmouth, Southsea, PO4 9LY

🦪 What you’ll be doing: scrubbing oysters to remove any dirt and other animals; giving them a bath to ensure they are extra clean before they are placed on our new reef in Chichester Harbour.

Visit the link in the comments to sign up. 👇
Note – you’ll need to click the button to register as a Solent Seascape Project volunteer first – this takes just a couple of minutes.

We look forward to seeing you there!

With thanks to for all
their help.
