Drowning Prevention Week Water Safety Tip #5: Water Safety Starts with Swimming 🏊

Swimming lessons help children build confidence in the water, develop strong swimming skills and learn essential water safety awareness. While being able to swim doesn't remove all risk, it equips children with valuable skills and knowledge to help them stay safer around water.

From their first splashes in Ducklings to progressing through Stage 10 and HSV Lifesavers, we're here to support every step of your child's swimming journey.

Drowning Prevention Week Water Safety Tip #4: Be aware of your surroundings

Whether you're heading to the pool, beach, lake or river, always remember the Water Safety Code:

πŸ›‘ Stop and Think – Take a moment to assess your surroundings, look for potential dangers and follow local safety advice.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Stay Together – Always swim with friends, family or at a lifeguarded venue. Never swim alone.

It's important to:
βœ”οΈ Know and be aware of your surroundings
βœ”οΈ Swim where it's safe to do so
βœ”οΈ Never swim alone
βœ”οΈ Water can be great fun, but it's important to make safe choices in and around water.

A little preparation can make a big difference.

Cold water shock πŸ₯Ά Even on a warm summer's day, open water can be surprisingly cold.

Sudden entry into cold water can cause gasping, panic and loss of breathing control. If you unexpectedly enter cold water, remember to:
βœ”οΈ Roll over to float on your back as quick as possible
βœ”οΈ Stay calm
βœ”οΈ Regain control of your breathing

As soon as you're out of the water, it's important to get warm as soon as possible.

🚨 Water safety starts with education 🚨

Our Operations Manager, Matt, has been busy visiting local schools to deliver engaging and interactive water safety assemblies. This morning, he visited Panshanger Primary School in Welwyn Garden City to share vital water safety messages with pupils.

As we head into the warmer months and spend more time around pools, lakes, rivers and the coast, it’s more important than ever that children understand how to stay safe in and around water.

A huge thank you to all the schools who have welcomed Matt and supported this important initiative. Together, we’re helping young people build essential water safety skills for life.

Drowning Prevention Week Water Safety Tip #2: Stay Close

When visiting pools, beaches, lakes or rivers, always keep children within arm's reach.

Even confident swimmers can get into difficulty quickly, and supervision remains one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents.
