When buying a buoyancy aid, the most important thing is ensuring it fits correctly and is suitable for your weight range.

An ill-fitting buoyancy aid can ride up around your chin when in the water, restrict movement, and may not perform as intended when you need it most.

To choose the safest and most comfortable buoyancy aid, consider the following:
• Correct weight range – Always check the manufacturer's recommended weight range.
• Good fit – It should feel snug but comfortable, without restricting movement or breathing.
• Adjustable straps – Multiple adjustment points help achieve a secure fit.
• Secure fastening system – Check buckles, zips, and straps are robust and easy to use.
• Freedom of movement – Make sure you can paddle comfortably without the buoyancy aid rubbing or restricting your shoulders.
• Suitable buoyancy – Different activities may require different levels of buoyancy.
• Pockets and attachment points – Useful for carrying essential safety items such as a phone, whistle, towline, or snacks on longer trips.
• Bright colours and visibility features – These make you easier to spot on the water.
• Quality and certification – Look for recognised safety standards and buy from a reputable supplier.

At EpicLife, we are always happy to help you find the right buoyancy aid for your paddling. You are welcome to visit our Bodiam shop to try different models and sizes, and we can advise on correct fitting to ensure you stay safe and comfortable on the water.

We had a lovely evening trying out the new sauna at The Hub, provided by and it was the perfect way to end a Friday evening.

Tucked away in a peaceful spot just behind The Hub, the sauna offers a relaxing space to unwind, complete with a cold-water plunge tub for those brave enough to take the plunge!

The combination of being outdoors, enjoying the warmth of the sauna, and then cooling off in the plunge tub left us feeling refreshed, relaxed, and ready for the weekend.

We are excited to be adding a sauna session onto our Bodiam Social Paddle on Wednesday 24th June. EpicLife customers will receive a discount for the evening, making it an even better excuse to join us.

Keep an eye out for more paddle and sauna evenings, special offers, and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in a different way.

A gentle paddle along the River Rother followed by some well-earned relaxation in the sauna and plunge tub—what’s not to like?

We are often asked, "Why do I need to wear a buoyancy aid? I'm an excellent swimmer," or "The water is shallow, so I don't need one."

The simple answer is that a buoyancy aid is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment you can wear when taking part in watersports.

A buoyancy aid helps keep you afloat if you fall into the water, giving you extra time and energy to get back onto your paddleboard, kayak, or canoe safely. Even strong swimmers can become tired, injured, or affected by cold water shock, making it much harder to stay afloat unaided.

A buoyancy aid can:
• Help keep your head above water.
• Reduce fatigue while swimming or waiting for assistance.
• Provide extra confidence, especially for less experienced paddlers.
• Offer useful pockets and attachment points for safety equipment.
• Improve visibility to other water users and rescuers.
• Help protect your upper body from knocks and bumps.

Conditions on the water can change quickly, and accidents can happen unexpectedly. Cold water, strong currents, wind, hidden obstacles, or a simple slip can affect anyone, regardless of their swimming ability or experience.

At EpicLife, we strongly recommend that all paddlers wear a buoyancy aid whenever they are on the water. It is a simple piece of equipment that can make a huge difference in an emergency and helps ensure everyone can enjoy their time on the water safely.

Just as importantly, your buoyancy aid needs to fit correctly. A poorly fitting buoyancy aid may not perform as intended when you need it most.

If you would like advice on choosing the right buoyancy aid, please do not hesitate to contact us. We stock a range of buoyancy aids at our Bodiam shop and online, and you are very welcome to come and try them on. We are always happy to help with fitting advice and finding the most suitable buoyancy aid for your paddling activities.

Stay safe and enjoy your time on the water. #
