Hartlepool A vs Thornaby Aces Match Report

It was game week 2 in the A division and it was Thornaby Aces turn to travel to The Athenaeum on Monday night. A nervous encounter as they managed to hold the current league champions away from home in gameweek 1. As it was the case with us a fortnight ago the Aces arrived with a heavily depleted team (top 5 players were missing)

With Ray Stonehouse also missing it was upto Bill Wilson to fill his boots, and he did so with style as he was the first to finish around 21:00 against rising star A***n Nalawade. A tight game with Bill gaining a slight edge in the middlegame, a loose move and the wind was gone from Bills sails as A***n broke through the centre. A***n smelling blood he made a few rash moves and Bill using his experience to bring home the point with a nasty unstoppable checkmate threat. A***n clearly a one to look out for in the future.

Second to finish was our Greek Superstar Alex Kalyvoitis against CCA match organiser Chris Swales. Chris seemed to be slightly ahead in the game but struggled to find a critical move. 4 pawn and 2 rook endgame and neither player was able to progress, and a draw quickly fizzled out.

Third to finish was Michael Smalley – he went with an offbeat setup to which his opponent Stephen Rodgers had the extra move to develop his pieces. Stephen managed to get a pretty decent advantage after picking up a pawn and a trade of queens. Michael had to deal with a loose central pawn in the middle of the board that was a constant target for his opponent. Anyone who has played competitive chess would know that these positions can be quite stressful to defend. Through grit and determination – Michael managed to win the pawn back and suddenly the game was positionally dead drawn. Stephen offered a draw with 3 mins left to Michaels 30 mins and Michael sportingly accepted it.

After hearing Bernie turning down a draw offer as we needed to push for a win, the pressure was on me to produce a result against the very experienced Mike Creaney. We played several matches over the last 20 years and Mike still surprised me by playing the Black Lion (A system in Philidor / Old Indian). As per usual, I over pushed in the centre and dropped a pawn. Despite this, Mike launched a scary attack on my king but always had an escape. Another Rook endgame that quickly fizzled out after I won my pawn back. We agreed a draw (despite a debate whether I was winning or not) but with 2 mins on the clock with no increment left to run my king down to capture Mike's remaining pawn and accomplish a ‘Lucena position’ I was not confident in achieving this and seemed too risky given the current match score.

Bernie was last to finish again brand-new inaugurated county captain Dominic Leigh. A Sicilian Alapin to which Bernie got the better of. Dominic managed to worm his way out of trouble despite Bernie pressure. Once Peter and Mike agreed to a draw guaranteeing a Hartlepool draw. Bernie offered a draw pretty much instantly after to which Dominic agreed as he was significantly low on time.

Hartlepool A 3 – 2 Thornaby Aces – This was an excellent result even though a bit of luck was involved with Thornaby's availability. It felt like a battle on Monday with all 5 players giving it 100%. With major teams in the A division already dropping points this result puts us temporarily top of the league with Middlesbrough Rooks, who coincidentally we have away from home on Monday 27th October. Just want to thank Dominic for posting a match report prior to mine which helped me out with my report. Man of the match: Bill Wilson for having the only decisive result. Up the Pools.

Hartlepol C Team made the short journey to Billingham on Wednesday to play their first game of the season in the Cleveland B Division.

Kev Waterman, persuaded to kick his drinking habit to focus on the new season, played the French Defence against Brian Whittaker. Queens and minor pieces were traded very early on in this game, and both didn't have a clear cut way forward after Rooks were traded. 'I play better with a pint' - we'll see Kev.

John lost a Bishop very early on in his game from poor piece positioning and although he did try to mount a pawn counter attack, it was scuppered pretty quickly. He ended up resigning when his remaining minor piece was about to be taken. With no footy on the TV to go home early to, it was a frustrating night for John.

In my own game, we both promptly developed our pieces and castled, but an inaccurate move from Darren meant I was a pawn up, able to trade the Queens, and press the advantage with a steady pawn push on both sides of the board. With just the Kings and a number of pawns remaining, the Queen promotion was inevitable with the Jeremy Silman 'Fox in the chicken coop' technique.

Last to finish, and what would be the match decider, was the absolutely wild ride between Ashton and Stuart. Stuart had a devastating attack which looked like Ashton had just enough to defend his vulnerable King. The Queen's were then traded off and Ashton looked to have the upper hand. Then the pendulum swung back in Stuarts favour going into a pawn advantage endgame until Ashton missed a definite draw that allowed Stuart the dominant advantage resulting in a resignation.

Billingham vs Hartlepool A Match Report

Due to a freak week of player unavailability, a depleted A team played their first game of the season against Billingham Synthonias top dogs. No live performances at the venue this time round which made the conditions perfect for the match.

First finished was Graham Matthews against Synthonia captain Steve Cole. After a handful of trades in the opening/early middlegame. Steve managed to find a beautiful winning combination (see below) and black was toast. Can you find what Steve played?

Next to finish was Alex Costello against the experienced Paul Frank. A very sharp double-edged opening. Both were understandably afraid to push and a draw was agreed after only 10 moves. Despite this, this was a great result for Alex who still remains unbeaten for the A team.

Next to finish was Michael against Billinghams ‘Top G’ John Garnett which is a huge step up for Michael. A pretty mental opening which I’m not going to pretend I know the name off. Michael missed an early chance by placing his queen on the wrong square (right idea but understandably difficult to spot) After several trades including both queens it seemed like John might have had an early advantage in the endgame. Michael showed extreme resilience and eventually accepted John's draw offer. This was certainly the key result of the match.

Pressure was on Hartlepool for the remaining 2 games. Next to finish was myself against Sean Cassidy. A very positional game from the off, Sean forced quite a lot of trades and found himself pressuring my g2 square with various mating threats. I managed to blunt Black's white squared Bishop and after Sean forced the Queens off, he had a loose isolated pawn in the middle of the board and my King was better placed to capture. The Rook endgame with that extra pawn was converted into a win. Pretty pleased with this as looking at Sean's results he doesn’t seem to lose many.

Now with the score now even it was down to Alex Kalyviotis to bring home the bacon against Darren Donnison. A Nimzo-Indian Samisch variation with 4…Be7 rather than the typical 4…Bxc3+. After around 25 moves Alex was down to about 20mins on the clock to Darrens 1hr 20. Alex mentioned “The position was totally flat so I was confident of a draw. It feels though I had opportunities to win though under so little time I was unable to find the win” …When my game finished I noticed Alex only having 2 mins left on the clock and I thought he was toast. Minutes later I revisited the board and found that Alex found a draw with less than 10 seconds left! Good work Alex!

Overall, pretty pleased with the draw considering.. Next up a tough match at home against the new look Thornaby Aces team.

Thanks for reading, below is Steve Cole v Graham Matthews. White to play. What is the strongest continuation?

In the opening game of the season, Hartlepool D faced off against one of the young talented Redcar teams who travelled to The Athenaeum.

Ellis took control of the centre early on. A few moves later and his opponent made a pawn move which weakened the King allowing a check on b4 which had to be blocked by the Bishop. Using the pin on the Bishop he was able to win a misplaced Knight on g5. From then on Ellis was able to convert the material advantage to win with a checkmate.

On board four, Will's game opened with a risky knight sacrifice for black that led to a locked down position with neither side being able to progress. A draw was agreed.

In John's game it was fairly even but an attack with Queen and Rook on the King side was well defended by Callum and he eventually cornered John's king and forced a resignation.

On board one, a superior development advantage from Priest was seized upon further when an anticipated blunder led to a free take of Allan's white squared Bishop after forcing the white Queen around the board in avoiding capture.
The take, planted black's white squared Bishop firmly in the centre of the board, preventing Redcar's Allan from castling, which would ultimately lead to his resignation and a first win of the season for Priest and Hartlepool.

A great start in the C Division against a very tough team!

2nd Hartlepool v Billingham Annual Match

It was Billingham Synthonia's turn to host this year. Due to the success of our C and D division teams last year and with heavy rating improvement we opted to field only 11 players to try and balance the ratings books to make the match more competitive. The now recently demoted “2nd coolest guy in chess” captain Peter Harker won the toss and opted to go with white on the odd boards with the strategy that he wants the most aggressive players with the white pieces. The match begun at 19:15 with the pleasure of a live band putting on a show next door to us.

Bill was against the very experienced John Garnett who was still fresh from Hull Congress and the British Championships. He faced the Scandy, Bill used his experience with white against this opening, from what I seen there was a bit of a scrap in the centre. Despite the rare Qd6 move Bill put on a solid performance and game quickly fizzled to a draw.

Michael was against Synthonia captain Steve Cole. A rather scrappy affair with plenty of pieces still on the board and on pretty weird squares right until the end. A draw offer from Michael on move 19 was quickly rejected by Steve. After several moves of cancelling each other out a draw was finally agreed.

Captain Harker was against Darren Donnison. Darren was 10 mins late to the match and then took another 5 mins to reply to 1.d4. Peter won a pawn early, but being characteristically impatient, Peter decided to do a very committal g4 move opening up his castled king. The match suddenly got a bit double-edged but Peter had a fortress around this king still and found a crafty outposted knight that caused havok. Darren left his rook en prise due to the havok. Peter is either a strategical genius or got VERY lucky.

I did not see much of Graham Matthews match against Dave Frank. I am aware it was a Budapest Gambit which usually ends up in razor sharp positions anyway. But Dave managed to resist the pressure and convert the win. A decent and important result for Synthonia.

Our Greek import Alex Kalyviotis showed excellent rook endgame technique against Brian Whittaker. It was the second last match to finish when we needed at least a win and a draw to retain the cup. Alex was as cool as the Greek God “Boreas.” Pressure? What pressure..

Prodigy Ashton Woodward up next – Arrived 20 mins late against the much-improved Stuart McLaughlin. Didn’t see much of this one, but it was over early with a win for Ashton. Ashton is definitely a one to look out for next season.

Mark had a very epic encounter with a VERY much-improved Dave Elston. We were aware that he has had a couple of BIG scalps over the summer at the Vince Skillcorn memorial tournament recently. The last game to finish. With Alex winning we only needed the draw to retain the cup. A very crafty tactic from Mark winning a piece I thought we were suddenly in with a great chance. Marks problem.. An armada of pawns getting hot on this king. To quote Mark his “batteries ran out” and made a very critical mistake at the end which allowed Dave to eventually promote a pawn. An intense affair due to match circumstances. I believe there was an issue with the clock and for some reason the time was approaching 23:00 and they both had 10 mins left? Yep, your guess is as good as mine? Special thanks to Mark for playing as he had only just returned from working offshore and he gave it 100% despite heavy fatigue.

Charlie Marshall won a Bishop very early in his match, and was just a matter of patience. He found a lovely pin to win the queen or his opponent Graham Glass would be checkmated. A fine performance from Charlie with around 85% accuracy. Graham was very sporting and I had a lovely chat with him about his Golfing escapades outside after the match. Lovely bloke.

I did not see much of the remaining matches that featured John, Dave and Graham Marshall. Sadly the trio lost but Graham had only positive things to say about his young opponent Steven Clark. It will be interesting to see how he will progress over the next 12 months in the league.

All in all, it was a very pleasant evening despite losing 6-5 to Billingham. All games were played in good spirits and it is always nice to visit and have a catch up with our noisy chess neighbours. We’ll get you next year!!

Thanks for reading.

Match Report

Hartlepool C team played their final league match of the season away at Thornaby on Tuesday night. Anticipating a tough match against the Cadets, it looked like it would be a great opportunity to give the likes of Ashton and John some C Division boards one and two experience. However, with Ashton unavailable, and a number of other members unavailable, we went to Thornaby with a strong team.

John said his opponent 'played well and I didn't'. He got his queen in a threatening position early on and not having castled meant that John's King was vulnerable. I managed to see the moment John blundered his Queen which meant a nice tactic opened up for his opponent to capture it.

Charlie went 2 pawns up early on, and in the middle game he managed to push his pawns giving his opponent all sorts of problems that eventually resulted in a resignation.

On board two, Mark had a poor night making basic errors and never subsequently got back into the game after his opponent castled Queenside with complete centre control.

Last to finish, I lost a pawn going into the middlegame, but won it back with some counter-play, but an overly aggressive pawn push meant my opponent gained control of the game again. I ended up having a lovely tactic to check his King with my Rook which meant he had to take it back with his King leaving his Queen undefended. Eventually I won with a checkmate promoting a pawn.

A great season for the C team with 12 members featuring in one or more of the matches.

Hartlepool C Team only needed 1 point to secure the C Division league title last night, and after being dealt their first loss of the season in their last match almost a month ago, a strong team was named.

Mark (Board 3):

The 'Glek System' was explored by John Halliday after a 'Four Knights' opening, but too many pawn moves proved costly, to the detriment of white's Queen! I missed an early checkmate opportunity by focusing on the Queen capture which subsequently led to some good counter-play by white, but the lack of a major piece proved too much when exd1=Q on move 42 resulted in a resignation by the Darlington man.

Ellis (Board 4):

'It started as a standard opening where me and my opponent developed our pieces naturally. But it then turned aggressive for both sides with each of our moves attacking the other’s kingside. Black got overly aggressive with a Knight sacrifice which could have lead to checkmate if I took it with a pawn, however I managed to nullify the threat by taking with my own Knight and directly protecting the h2 square where mate was being threatened. From then on I was up a piece and took advantage of Black’s weakened position and misplaced pieces to safely attack their vulnerable king and win.'

Alex (Board 2):

'I would just say a close game but a tactical oversight left a Bishop unguarded and the Queen in a vulnerable position. Mark resigned shortly after losing his Queen.'

On board one, I faced Stephen Halliday for the second time this season. Straight out of the opening, instead of sticking to the theory, I made a poor positional move. I then missed a tactic which meant I would be a Knight down, and despite some aggressive counter-play, Stephen completely squashed any hopes of getting back into the game, which resulted in my resignation.

Falling short on board one, but with excellent wins against some tough opponents on the other boards, Hartlepool C secured the C Division title!

Hartlepool C team played against Thornaby Comets on Tuesday, and only needing a point to clinch the league title, team spirits were optimistic.

Ashton was playing against Phil in what was probably his toughest league game of the season. With black pieces he went into a variation we’ve both looked at in the past during friendly games, but he developed a Knight to the wrong square which prevented him from developing and castling safely. Eventually, with Phil in the ascendancy, he dropped a minor piece in the centre and had no counter play so resigned.

After castling on the short side, it looked like John was going to lose his Queen so he ended up having to take Stephen's Bishop with the pawn directly in front of the King. This left him exposed and he couldn't recover from the position.

Thornaby had to make a last minute change on board four, luckily Neil was deputising as their team captain and stepped in to play Graham. Graham gained an early pawn advantage, and quickly picked up another. He then improved further by picking up a Knight and looked to be comfortably high flying towards a win. Unfortunately after the hard work was done he squandered a Rook for nothing, and left himself in a hopeless position in an endgame.

Last to finish, and on board one, I faced Maurice with the white pieces. Maurice played aggressively out of the opening looking to exchange his Bishop for a Rook, but this just meant I could successfully develop all my pieces and castle. Instead of fighting for the centre, black allowed an aggressive pawn push which allowed centre control for myself whilst picking up a piece. With all sorts of tactics for white, and pressure on black’s King and Queen with forks and pins, his Queen was eventually trapped and shortly after he resigned.

A disappointing evening for the C team, missing out on securing the title, and being dealt their first loss of the season.

Darlington C vs Hartlepool B

Alex had a tough match-up against Dominic on board one, with the pair facing off previously only at last year’s Durham Chess Congress. The game ended up with a number of exchanges and both Kings were rushed to the centre in the endgame. Foreseeing that, and with no obvious imbalance in the position, Dominic offered a draw on move 18, which Alex accepted after 10 minutes of pondering.

Michael was playing against Richard Harris once again with the black pieces on board two, but this time Richard opted for a different variation. Richard went a pawn up and managed to get his pieces well positioned to defend his vulnerable centre pawn, so Michael decided to lock up the Queenside of the board and the position was looking too complicated for a break through. A draw was offered and Richard accepted with his time on the clock possibly giving him problems if he opted to play on looking for a breakthrough.

Alex went a piece down in the middlegame, and with time running low he was on the ropes as his opponent kept harassing a vulnerable queen. An exchange of Queens was declined by Alex and he ended up blundering again which resulted in a resignation.

On board four, Mark countered a Polish opening with the Czech defence. Black managed to exchange a Rook for a Knight on a1 as the opening was coming to a conclusion. The exchange led to middle game dominance which ultimately resulted in resignation by the Darlington player as Priest closed in to finish the game by promoting a pawn.

A solid 2-2 draw for Hartlepool B against a very tough Darlington side! A very good win for Mark on board four against a solid opponent much higher rated, and two well earned draws for Michael and Alex Kalyviotis. Alex Costello found it tough against a higher rated opponent but more game experience in the tank for him!

Dominic Leigh ½ - ½ Alex Kalyviotis
Richard Harris ½ - ½ Michael Smalley
Robert Donner 1 - 0 Alex Costello
Peter Mckay 0 - 1 Mark Priest
