Hi everyone, Ben here. Iβm considering offering FREE Water Safety talks on behalf of Endeavour Swim School to childrenβs clubs, teams and groups across Hartlepool between now and the first week back at school.
βΌοΈIf this is something your club, team or organisation would be interested in, please send me a message. If I receive enough enquiries, Iβll get these sessions organisedβΌοΈ
Why am I doing this? Why now?
Iβve taught swimming for over 8 years and have delivered numerous water safety sessions to children throughout Hartlepool.
Sadly, this year more than ever, weβve seen far too many serious incidents along our coastline, with some ending in tragedy. We live in a coastal town where it becomes too tempting to enter the water on a hot day, but we need to raise awareness as to when it is the right time to do so.
Every child deserves to know how to stay safe around water. While we reinforce these messages every day in our lessons, not every childβor adultβis aware of the Water Safety Code or understands what to do in an emergency.
π The Water Safety Code
π STOP & THINK
Before going near the water, ask yourself: Is it safe? Always choose places where itβs safe to swim, such as a lifeguarded swimming pool or between the red and yellow flags at a lifeguarded beach.
π¨βπ©βπ§ Stay together
Children should always be supervised by a responsible adult and stay within armβs reach when in or near deeper water. Never swim alone.
π FLOAT
If you find yourself in difficulty, fight the instinct to panic. Float on your back, keep your ears submerged, your head tilted back and your arms out to the side. If youβve entered cold water, you may experience cold water shock. Remaining calm, floating and controlling your breathing for 60β90 seconds can make all the difference.
π CALL 999
If someone is in trouble in the water, donβt enter the water yourself. Instead, throw them something that floats if possible and call 999 immediately.
β’ At the coast β ask for the Coastguard.
β’ Inland β ask for the Fire & Rescue Service.
This post only scratches the surface of what Iβd cover during these sessions. The aim is to give children the knowledge and confidence to make safer decisions around waterβknowledge that could one day save a life.
If you know of a school, sports club, scout group, youth organisation or childrenβs team in Hartlepool that could benefit from a FREE Water Safety talk, please tag them below or share this post with themβ
