A leaked first glimpse at this coming season’s Hartfield Cricket Club fixture card!

The truth according to the MCC about our first recorded fixture.

From the MCC:

I believe your journalist/historian is correct regarding the first known fixture by Hartfield as being earlier than 1764. According to the book 'Sussex Cricket in the Eighteenth Century' by Timothy J McCann, there was a fixture between Hartfield and Withyham in 1752, which was played at Withyham on Whit-Wednesday for half a Guinea per man. They played two matches against each other that month; while the date of the first was unknown, the second, at Hartfield, was on the 30th of May 1752. The first fixture is also recorded in another book, 'Fresh Light on Pre-Victorian Cricket' by G B Buckley and was taken from the Sussex Weekly Advertiser; unfortunately there are no further details regarding the score or players.

Surprisingly the book I mention, published by the Sussex Record Society in 2004, has no mention of the 1764 fixture.

I hope this information is of use to you.

Kind regards, Robert

Stop press:
I proud to announce that Sir Brunners of Lowers has accepted the Pomme de Terre Chaud of Outfield Tsar. He has the dubious honour of sifting through the ideas, from buying a combine harvester to a moving hutch of Hamsters 🐹. Good luck, looking forward to the presentation.
