Olympic Weightlifting

I’m a perfectionist when it comes to technique but that doesn’t mean I have perfect technique. I don’t! But I try to chase it.

Whether the barbell weighs 40kg or 140kg, the rep should look identical. This is a principle I passionately implement into my coaching with my clients. The barbell weight doesn’t and shouldn’t increase until a “challenging” load is performed technically well and done so frequently. This ensures consistency, it builds and develops muscle memory of the movement, but most importantly it ensures the safety of my clients.

Technique OVER weight.

To quote my good friends Earth, Wind & Fire, this is an old workout from the files of “the 21st night of September”.

🎶 “Ba-dee-ya, say, do you remember? Ba-dee-ya, SLED PUSH in September!”🎶

5 sets
2:00 on / 2:00 off
15/10 cal Ski
5 Clean & Jerk
AMRAP Sled Push in remaining time

(This can be done with a friend. Partner A works for 2 min while Partner B rests for 2 min)

This is the kind of workout I program for my clients who are looking to improve their overall functional fitness. The sled is rarely programmed in your typical gym class. So I sprinkle this, as well as other odd-object movements, into workouts to add another dimension to my clients’ training and… because it’s FUN!

Aerobic Capacity Training

One of Andy’s goals for 2023 is 8 min 20 secs for 2,000m Row whilst shouting uncontrollably. That’s a 2:05 min per 500m pace.

How do we work towards that goal? We train and practise at that pace or faster to build our capacity by exposing our body to that intensity to promote adaptation. This principle can be used for anything, not just rowing.

Give this a try:

3 x 400m @ 100% of target pace
Rest 1:00 b/t sets
-
Rest 1:30 after 3rd set
-
3 x 300m @ 102-105% of target pace
Rest 1:00 b/t sets
-
Rest 1:30 after 3rd set
-
3 x 200m @ 107-112% of target pace
Rest 1:00 b/t sets
-
Rest 1:30 after 3rd set
-
3 x 100m @ 115-120% of target pace
Rest 1:00 b/t sets

How to calculate pace percentages:
Target pace (in seconds) divided by percentage (as a decimal)

Example
120% of 2:05 pace

125 secs divided by 1.2 = 105 secs = 1:45 pace per 500m
