βοΈπͺ Sunshine's out, back door's open... but could you be accidentally training future puddles?
With the lovely weather, it's tempting to leave the back door open all day so your dog can wander in and out as they please. But here's a little bladder-building fact that often catches people out...
For puppies especially, constant access to the garden can mean they get into the habit of emptying their bladder little and often, rather than learning to hold it. That's fine while the sun is shining and the door is open. π
Fast forward to autumn and winter... π§οΈβοΈ
The door stays shut, walks may get shorter, and suddenly you're wondering where those indoor p*e puddles came from.
Here are our top 3 tips to help future-you avoid the mop bucket:
πΎ 1. Stick to scheduled toilet breaks
Even if the door is open, encourage your dog to go out at specific times rather than whenever the mood takes them. This helps build bladder control and creates a reliable routine.
πΎ 2. Reward the "big wees"
When your dog empties their bladder properly outside, make it worth their while. Praise, treats, or a quick game can help reinforce the behaviour you want to see.
πΎ 3. Don't rely on the open-door policy
Spend some time each day with the door closed and actively take your dog out for toilet trips. This helps them learn that access to the garden isn't guaranteed 24/7.
A little bladder fitness now can save a lot of carpet cleaning later. ππΆ
