First win of the season! 🥳

On Saturday we travelled to . Both captains were yet to win a toss but Astie called correctly and opted to bowl. Things were kept very tight in the first 10 overs by openers Ali Smith and Toby Malpas with Ali chipping away at the top order. As Painswick looked to kick on after the drinks break on came the skipper who picked up 4 middle order wickets. Ali Smith then returned and took the final wicket with a one handed caught and bowled to finish with superb figures of 4/11.

The momentum stayed in our favour at the change of innings, Ali and Steve Jones kept us well ahead of the required run rate from the off. Ali ultimately fell for 54 which brought Conrad Jones to the crease to see if the father-son pairing could take us home. Steve brought up his 50 with consecutive fours but the shot of the day was the match winner. 6 needed to win and Conrad slapped the ball back over the bowlers head for an almighty maximum.

We look to keep up the winning feeling at home to this weekend

It was a frustrating return to the Merryfields. The skipper lost another toss and once again we were batting first. The father-son Jones combination shared the top score of 24 but the total of 119 always looked a bit short.

Regular wickets kept the hopes alive but ultimately there wasn't enough scoreboard pressure on the Lechlade batsman and they got over the line in the 28th over.

3 changes to last week's team. In come Bryn Powell for his debut, Gary Whenman and Luke Cox for David Brewis, James Pullen and Luke Evans.

Both games against Oaksey last season fell foul to the weather so fingers crossed we're able to go the distance today!

It wasn't the result we wanted, but plenty of positives to take from our first fixture of the season, despite how it looks on the card.
Stand out performances from Steve Jones with the bat and the Malpas father and son combo with the ball.

Onto Oaksey this week 🏏

2nd XI 2023 Summary

All things considered, the 2nd team had a season to be proud of. All the talk in the off-season was whether we'd be able to field a 2nd XI but thanks to the hard work and consistency of skipper Andy Malpas and son Toby, we were able to name a side for 15 of the 16 league games. A mid-table finish was very respectable, but more importantly we've integrated lots of new players into the club.

With the bat, skipper Andy was just pipped at the top of the charts by Gary Whenman. Gary also stepped up to take the keeping gloves when we had no regular keepers available and took some absolute stunners along the way.

Andy again just missed out on the bowling award but this time it was Toby Malpas who got the most wickets across the club with 23.

The fielding charts were close right to the end. Colin Pensom took 8 fielding wickets across the season, 6 of which were for the 2nds. He is joint top with Liam Bushell. New to cricket this year, he took 6 catches in the 2nds and another 2 in the 1st team.

1st XI 2023 Summary

Due to a new team entering Division 5 of the County League, one extra team is being relegated from Division 6 this year and unfortunately that will be us. 6 out of our 18 matches fell foul to the rain but we had enough chances in the games that we're completed to take the few extra points we needed to stay up.

The ever reliable Ali Smith once again ends the season as our top run scorer, and he also topped the Division's run scoring charts. He was also crucial with the ball and in the field throughout the year again.

Skipper ends the season as both top bowler and tip fielder. He took 20 wickets, 5 catches and got 3 run outs to top both charts for bowling and fielding wickets taken. Kudos to .whiting.988 too who made the top 3 in all 3 categories. A proper all-rounder and key figure at the club due to his work on the pitch, but also off the pitch as our Head Groundsman.

Steve Jones is our other trophy winner. His 14 wickets behind the stumps meant that he has won the best Wicket Keeper award for GCCL Div 6.

Final weeks' Round-ups 👇

Unfortunately, there wasn't much to shout about in the final two weeks of our season.

The 1st team had their fate in their own hands going into the closing weeks of the season. They had Apperley 121/8 but a sturdy counter attack from Williamson and Allday meant that the visitor's innings went on too long for our liking and when the rain came down we were only 6 overs into the chase. The pick of the bowling came from skipper Astie Bolton who was a no ball wicket away from a maiden 1st XI five-for and took his 20th of the season.

There was a big toss to win due to the week's rain at Tormarton and the the hosts put us into bat. Early wickets meant that the hosts were always on top. Ali Smith hit another half century and cemented his place as top batsman in the league but as the sun came out and the pitch dried up the result looked inevitable. When Tormarton sealed their 7 wicket victory it secured their spot in Div 6 and relegated our 1st team.

The 2nd XI had a similarly tough finish to the season. They did beat the rain in the penultimate game of the season but it was a run fest at Oldlands with two home team batsmen scoring tons. Ross Thompson top scored with 83 and David Brewis got his maiden half century to provide a silver lining to the 200 run loss.

The final home game of the season very nearly didn't go ahead due to mounting unavailability issues. However, we were just able to put out a side and Tetbury made light work of taking the win

Weekly Round-up 👇

A top quality day of cricket yesterday saw us gather some momentum for the end of the season with a Double W!

The 1st XI travelled to Eastcombe, one place below us in the league. It didn't start well with the skipper losing the toss then a rain delay just 5 balls into our innings. It only got better from there though as we amassed a mammoth 292/7. Ali Smith scored the club's first century of the season made all the more impressive by the tricky wicket which had suffered from mother nature at regular intervals through the day.

Craig Whiting took a wicket off the first ball of the host's innings and we were dominant throughout. Change bowlers Seewaka Jayawardena and Noaman Ansari starred with the ball taking the final 7 wickets for a combined 22 runs.

We're all set for a nail biting end to the season in Div 6. 8th place gets relegated and there are currently 3 other teams fighting out with us to avoid relegation. Just 14 points separate us and we finish our season with at home next week then away on the final week of the season.

The 2nd XI hosted Stroud in a game which has had it's fair share of fireworks in recent years. Stroud batted first and made it to 136/3 with former Haresfield player Russ Culver hitting 50. In reply, both openers went cheaply and it was the new guard who took us over the line. Gary Whenman once again top scored and it was the brand new partnership of Liam Bushell and Matty Hill who took us over the line for a 5 wicket victory
