The 3" 1/2 Hardy Fortuna Junior fly reel and this early example, being leaded in finish, as opposed to the brighter, later versions, retains so much of its original finish. Twin ebonite handles on a brass cross bar and the patented "Andreas" drag system. Not many of these produced and few left in existence.

For me, these Salmon flies, which originate from the 6th Duke of Roxburghe, give us a window into the patterns that were available during the early to mid Victorian era. We tend to view the latter versions from the last quarter of the Victorian period with a certain splendour but these patterns are the stepping stones to these in my view.

Forrest of Kelso established the business in 1837 and it is highly probably, given their proximity to Floors Castle, that they made some, if not all of these patterns. As ever, I am always happy to engage with healthy debate and view these flies as a significant collection of early Victorian flies. What I cannot dismiss, is whether any of these were inherited from the 5th Duke, which again, is highly possible. If anyone has anything similar, I am sure that the group would like to see these.
