Hamble River Sailing Club

Hamble River Sailing Club Set sail with Hamble River Sailing Club! As an RYA-recognized centre, we offer a wide range of courses for all skill levels both Children and Adults. C. calendar.

We also have a very active Youth Sailing group that meet regularly. Get in touch today! As the oldest surviving sailing club in the village Hamble River Sailing Club was originally founded in August 1919 by a group of seven Hamble men “to encourage the sport of small boat sailing and racing”. They were determined that the club would provide sailing opportunities for all those who lived and worked

in all the parishes along the banks of the Hamble River. This included the many men who worked on the yachts as paid hands and were considered as professional sailors and therefore excluded from participating in many sailing races.Nowadays the club provides racing for Keelboats, XOD's, Foxers and Lazers. It has a well established Cadet Training programme. The club runs the following major open events: The Garmin Hamble Winter Series, The MDL Big Boat Championships, The Doyle Sails One Design Championships, The Warming Pan and the Women's Open Keelboat Championship .New members are always welcome. The popularity of dinghy sailing accelerated during the late 50’s and the list of club members and their sailing achievements over the next twenty years made the club one of the premier sailing clubs in the U.K. Many of today’s leading yacht designers, mast manufacturers and sail-makers learnt their skills in the dinghy classes at Hamble River S. This era reached a peak in 1972 when six of the 13-man Great Britain Olympic sailing team were Hamble River members and they brought back a Gold and Silver medal. The result of this and other factors has seen the club expand to include yachts as well as dinghies. Perhaps the greatest single advance has been the development of the Hamble Winter Series. Started in the early 80’s as an end of season club event this has now grown into the premier Autumnal series in the U.K. Last year, with Title Sponsorship from Garmin, 200 boats in eleven classes enjoyed world-class racing over an eight-week period. In the process they also raised £2400 for local charities. A major sponsorship drive over the past few years has seen the arrival of seven Firefly dinghies for club use. A grant from the Flagstaff Trust will enable the club to provide a number of sailing schools this season for the club’s cadets. As a result of these initiatives there is a regular programme of youth sailing and racing planned for the coming season. The club also offers a qualified RYA training school for all those wishes to learn how to sail or even more so learn to navigate the waters at speed with power boating. For more information on the training school or to book please contact Harry Ives the chief instructor. [email protected]

Today’s membership enjoy the comforts of a pleasant clubhouse with modern facilities, have regular club racing with the chance to compete with the best at special events and include a growing band of youngsters who want to participate in dinghy sailing. The Founders’ aims to promote sailing to all are still very important and valid. If you would like to find out more about our activities then please ring 02380 452070 or email [email protected] or, best of all, come in and see us! The club office is open Monday mornings, Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings. The Bar is open on Friday evenings and Sunday lunchtimes during the winter. During the summer the club is also open on Wednesday evenings for club racing and at the weekend.

Youth Sailing Picnic at Badnam Creek
Thirty‑eight excited young sailors set off from Hamble on a gloriously sunny Saturday, ready for an adventure up to Badnam Creek. With barely a whisper of wind, progress was… leisurely. Cries of “paddle!” and “there’s wind over here!” echoed across the river as boats drifted gently on the incoming tide. Spirits stayed high, though — especially when three more Youth Sailors appeared on their paddle boards to join the fun. Some of the parents travelled to the Creek in more style than others, thanks to Olly's river launch.
Once everyone reached the creek, the muddy banks became the perfect base for a picnic, chatter, and plenty of splashing about. The kids turned the creek into their own playground, and even the adults couldn’t resist getting involved when the annual paddle‑board run kicked off. This year’s attempts featured forward rolls and other gymnastic flourishes, though, as everyone agreed, absolutely none of these were performed by James.
As the tide began to slip away, a fleet of tired, muddy, and very happy sailors drifted or were towed back to the Hamble slipway. The clubhouse was waiting with well‑earned ice creams and cold drinks, and it was brilliant to see so many new faces and catch up with so many families. A perfect day of sunshine, silliness, and sailing, exactly what Youth Sailing is all about.

Our Topper sailors were out again this weekend, this time at Hayling Island SC (HISC) for the ITCA (GBR) NS4 event.
A fantastic turnout of 17 HRSC sailors taking part from the 111 entries.
Saturday brought lighter winds before conditions picked up on Sunday, giving the sailors a great mix of racing across the weekend. There were some brilliant results throughout the fleet, with several sailors competing in their very first National Series event, a huge achievement in itself!
Special congratulations to Martha for finishing 3rd in the 4.2 fleet a great achievement, and Hendrick for a fantastic 10th place in the 5.3 fleet. Well done to all of our sailors for representing the club and Team Hamble so well!

A busy Bank Holiday weekend at HRSC! ⛵☀️

The weekend kicked off on Friday night with 11 of our youth sailors starting their Assistant Instructor course. Over the weekend they learnt the RYA methods for instructing and got to grips with planning sessions, communication skills, and building confidence on the water. Well done to them all for a brilliant weekend, we look forward to following their instructing journey!

On Saturday our youth sailors were back out on the water for Big Saturday 2, with Peanuts, Junior Cadets and Cadets sailing in the morning, followed by the Toppers and 15+ group in the afternoon. There was lots of laughter, fun and fantastic sailing from both sailors and their parents.

On Sunday morning, the Foxers were racing in their usual Sunday Series, while in the afternoon the Adult Dinghy sailors headed out too, joined by some new members to the group. Sailors enjoyed a calm breeze and sunshine, the perfect way to shake away the winter cobwebs.

On Monday, some of our older youth sailors got out on the water in the club’s new 29er — an exciting new pathway for high-performance youth racing at HRSC. The light breeze made for a great sail alongside some 29er friends from Warsash Sailing Club .

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, instructors, parents and sailors who made it such a fantastic weekend at the club! We look forward to some more great weekends out on the water this summer.
