Leisure World has proudly been home to Colchester Phoenix Amateur Swimming Club for 33 years. Founded by the late Maggie Hargreaves, the club was built on one powerful motto: “Ability, not disability.”

This season, their swimmers have shown exactly what that means, winning golds, smashing PBs and showing true hard work in the water.

Head Coach Tracy Cole says: “We may be a small club with limited pool time and resources, but our heart is huge.”

And it really is. 💙

MYTH: 'My child can swim in a pool, so they can swim in the sea'. 🌊

FACT: Swimming in open water presents a different challenge and children should understand how to safe self-rescue. ⚠️

Knowing when not to swim is just as important as knowing how to swim 🌊🩵

We’re seeing a few social media posts highlighting the dangers of sea swimming. For those of us who swim regularly, this can feel frightening, yet deep down, we usually know when the sea is safe and when it’s not. These are gentle reminders for both experienced and beginner sea swimmers.

Before entering the water, take a few minutes to really read the conditions.

Things to look for on the beach:
• Large, powerful waves breaking far out
• Waves closing out across the whole beach with no calm channels
• Strong white water surging up the shore
• Sand being dragged back quickly under your feet (strong backwash)
• Wind whipping spray off the wave tops

Things to look for in a bay:
• Choppy, confused water with no obvious calm areas
• Waves wrapping around headlands and rebounding off rocks
• Strong surface movement pulling away from the shore (often offshore winds)
• Foam, seaweed, or debris moving steadily in one direction

If the sea looks angry, chaotic, or unpredictable, it probably is. No swim is worth the risk. There’s always another day, and choosing to stay out is a sign of experience not weakness.

Respect the sea, trust your instincts, and look out for each other 🌊
