U12

Match Report:
They came. They saw. They conquered.

After a build-up to this clash of Yorkshire’s rugby titans longer than one of Anton’s speeches in training, the day of the unstoppable force meeting the immoveable object had arrived.

On the back of a 20 month long unbeaten streak, Pontefract were clearly confident and looking strong in the warm-up, with Rishies arrival on the training pitch causing a few sideways glances, but striking little fear into the hearts or minds of a well drilled Ponty team.

RIshies had other ideas though, huddled together and given formidable inspiration by the most sought after quartet of coaches in England (the RFU especially looking for a new defence coach after the Australia match), the team were focused and prepared for what they knew would be their toughest test of the season so far.

Following a perfectly observed minute of silence, where both teams stood side by side in remembrance and reflection, the game was about to commence.

There was a quiet buzz in the air as if both sets of spectators knew this was the most important game of rugby across the globe this weekend, and they were not disappointed.

The mighty Rishies got off to an absolute flyer, the perfect balance of crashing into tackles, positional awareness and speed through hands out wide, causing Pontefract problems all across the line, leading to a brace of Tyler tries, which knocked Pontefract for six. Visibly shaken by this early Rishies onslaught, Ponty had no answers in the first quarter, with Monty crossing the line to finish off the perfect first 15 minutes.

Quarters two and three saw an epic battle of attack and defence from both teams, with a single try for Tyler the only difference between these powerhouses of the union game.

With both sides tiring during the fourth quarter, it came down to a combination of strength, skill, teamwork and determination to keep a clean sheet, to see a number of on the line defensive hits preventing Pontefract from breaking their duck, and another 2 tries from Tyler to round-off a heroic performance by the Rishies team.

Callum came away with the parent’s player award, with Vinny earning the opposition coach’s player of the match.

Quite rightly after such an amazing performance, the 100% effort award went to the whole team: Luca, Charlie, Nyle, Harry, Eddie, Hector, Monty, Tyler, Archie, Vinny, Oscar, Louie, Callum, Rhys, Billy, and Mason – this few, this happy few, this band of brothers.

Evening u15s match report. The 15s welcomed Pontefract for the first time to the autumnal Hollas Lane pitch looking to reverse some recent trends. Bouyed by a strong squad Rish kicked off the first half down the slightest of slight slopes. The unknown quantity of Pontefract showed from the off they would be a challenge for the lads. But strong ball runners and tough league hardened tacklers. The first half was predominantly Rish in attack. Showing lots of structured play through solid pick and goes by the forward and release to outside backs, the forwards marshalled loudly by no9 Edward, to make that difference boys need to react quickly and not look around for others to do the work. Slow ball was easy to defend. Rish were able to apply plenty of pressure but could not make that killer blow and cross the white wash. Whilst scrums were even, Rish won the first few against the head, which continued the pressure. Harry was over the ball like a irrating rash, either turning over or getting the penalty for holding on. Will T kicked well down the line and the maul off the lineouts ticked along nicely, a good number of solid drivers. Josh, Joe l and Joe g had some storming break, Isaac got held up and put into touch but the treasured try eluded the good build up work. Amongst all this ponte 8 and 12 showed their power and speed, they were initially well marshalled by ruebens Jp and the back row, a slight lapse and a good half length run in from the powerful centre. 0.7. An improvement from previous games, our head didn't go down and Rish kept the pressure on playing in the right half and the maul being a good threat and ground eater. No luck, half time 0.7. Second half and previous game problems addressed, ball secured from ko and ran back with good ruck and clean ball. Rish stuck to game plan but just seemed to not be able to get the final pass, catch or line break to gain momentum and pressure. Credit to ponte they didn't compete much at rucks and spread out in defense to s***f out Rish play. Despite plenty of good ball Rish backs didn't fire in attack today, defense sound, solid on edge and at back.
Whilst disappointing this was a good effort from Rish and seeing frustration they didn't throw in towel and kept plugging away. Second half was played a lot in the middle of the field, ponte came back strong in scrum and won a few against the head and some tempers flared. Clearly an embers were quickly stamped out by the ref as there was no need for silliness when two good teams battling it out.
It was a slog of a game, ponte living off scraps and quick pick down the short edge by ponte 12 and again a bit of a run in. 0.14..
Again Rish went back up and played in the right half, just not getting any real flex from the organised Ponte defense. After some pressure Rish put up a bomb, Ponte fullback in his 22 dropped it, Rish played to whistle and good awareness from Ty, he grubered the ball towards line, gathered well and try. A good result for the effort the team had put in. 5.14, convertion missed. The game petered out for final minutes and Pontefract victorious 5.14.
These are the tight games Rish need and showed today a significant improvement from the last 2games and sticking /trusting their game plan, teammates and own rability. So many good things today, Rish played good structured play, good team work, Ponte just had a couple of line breakers and individuals to win the game.
As I said a huge shift in mentality this week, no heads down, some great basics at lineout, scrum and ruck, a few wobbles but no team is perfect. Ex*****on and a few odd decisions to iron out and these games turn to a W.
Some things to work on, as always, but progression forward on a huge number of areas, such small points of difference today.

U12’s
Due to half term, Old Rish fielded a squad with several key players missing as we made the trip over to Hull for a 3-way with Hull Ionians, Doncaster Knights and Market Rasen. After a lengthy trip to meet opposition who would give this fine squad a challenging morning we were met with a sunny Humberside morning where we started against Hull Ionians U12 on a narrow and short pitch with 12 per side. Having brought a squad of 13, this was always destined to be a tough test. Hull were well drilled with an intense spectator interest in the Old Rish warm up and drills. Despite significant carries by the forwards and decent rucking the Old Rish individual talent did not win the day and after a 20 minute game it was a 10-0 loss. After every breakdown and reset, Hull had a plan and knew how to execute it. Heads were down, however Old Rish were not to be held back and in a spirited game against Doncaster Knights a 45-0 victory was recorded. Strong teamsmanship made the difference here and the team started to play as a unit both attacking and in defence. The final game saw a dogged Market Rasen take the game to Old Rish U12. Rucking and counter rucking were prevalent and a bigger Market Rasen squad were keen to leave their mark on a depleted and fatigued Old Rish side but with strong carries, fighting spirit and three excellently worked tries, Old Rish emerged victorious 15-5. A tough morning's rugby where we were made to feel exceptionally welcome and a return fixture with Hull attending Copley will be a total crowd please. UTR!
Parent's Player was deservedly Vinny. 100% Effort for Mason making a concerted rucking and driving effort, and an overall 100% Effort certificate for the whole U12 team with a dedicated and hard working performance against tough opposition

ROCHDALE V OR
With the U18 cup game off, the boys travelled to the dark side of the Pennines to take on Rochdale. With a mainly U17 team bolstered by a few U18s and coach Hirst in charge the boys started well. The Rochdale pack were a heavy side and took some containing. The front row of Sam B, Will and Max working hard to eventually have the upper hand. Captain Rocco De Vittoris pushed and probed from scrum half ably supported by Lucas Cribb at stand off who looked sharp with ball in hand as well as utilising his back line.
Ted Cockroft cleaned up some wayward kicking from Rochdale and looked to release his wingers Ronnie D and Adam D.
It was Adam Dakin who started the scoring off, he was difficult to tackle all day and capped a good run to score near the posts. Another who had a very good game Ellis Armstrong converted. Up front the contest was pretty even – Dillon North possibly the man of the match carried relentlessly at the Rochdale defence, always making metres. Sam Moore was immense in his first game back at number 8 in both defence and attack.
Rochdale got a try back when the OR defence went to sleep, which didn’t happen often. 7-5 OR.
The lineout was working well, Oliver Binns taking his own ball as well as disrupting the opposition. Eli Murray and Bailey Newsome were busy in support and defence. A couple of huge hits by Ellis Armstrong in the centre allowed his partner Henry W spaced to carry effectively however the score remained 7-5 at HT.
With a big squad there were plenty of rotations, Leo Freeman tackled well in the centre, Mylo swapping with Rocco at scrum half. Alfie Duffy went on to the wing and looked sharp in attack, solid in defence. Josh Cavalier brought his usual energy to the back row.
Jai Thorne came on and gave an alternative carrying threat than Dillon. Olly O replaced Lucas Cribb and took play into the Rochdale half.
OR were the better rugby side and had the upper hand but credit to the Rochdale team who made things difficult, they worked hard at scrum and breakdown not allowing OR to play quickly.
OR were deservedly next on the scoresheet although the try came from nowhere; the major pilferer Sam Moore pinched the ball of the opposition to race away to the try line. Olly OC converting.
The game remained scrappy, OR making more changes and whilst endeavour remained high accuracy was a little lacking. Player coach Hirst entered the fray to give the hard-working front row a breather. An interesting interjection from Hirst as he firstly nearly blew a huge overlap before a huge Marcus Smith-esque pass sent Alfie Duffy in at the corner for his debut try, great finish. Hirst then upset the referee and culminated in a little rest for some over aggressive tackling, a firm favourite for the D….silly-billy of the day award.
Despite being a man down Rish scored next, they went blind to find Olly OC who evaded and beat numerous defenders before kicking ahead to re-gather, and race away to then (crucially) place the ball to the side of the posts. In an effort to relieve Hirsty of his award he then missed the conversion! However, OR were home and hosed at 24-5.
Rochdale kept going and eventually after numerous penalties against the visitors they crashed over for another unconverted try, the game finishing 24-10. Whilst scrappy in parts, some tough rugby played, a good win and hopefully some lessons learnt. Onto Ripon at home next Sunday, KO 1230.
