A busy summer at Herstmonceux Bowls Club

July and August have been exceptionally busy months for Herstmonceux Bowls Club, with members sometimes playing three or four matches a week. Results have been mixed, but recent wins against Wadhurst, Gulliver’s of Bexhill, Westfield and Hollington have been particularly rewarding.

Monday club nights continue to be one of the highlights of the season, with new and experienced members competing together in the club’s popular American Tournament. Eight teams are taking part over seven weeks, with plenty of friendly rivalry and some excellent bowling. The triples contest was won by Julie Cottingham, ably supported by John Walter and Neil Holden, with Geoff Holt also a member of the winning American team, with several weeks still to play before the overall tournament winner is decided.

July also saw the club’s annual match against Herstmonceux Cricket Club for the Crouch Memorial Cup. The Bowls Club came out on top in a closely fought and thoroughly enjoyable evening, which was attended by members of the Crouch family. A barbecue and bumper raffle added to the occasion, with part of the proceeds being donated to charity.

Another highlight was the club’s Jackaroo Tournament, sponsored by Experium Financial Services, where new and experienced members were paired together for an afternoon of knockout games played in the Australian format. The winners were Lesley Hamill and David Morris. The unusual trophies, in the shape of a boomerang and kangaroo, were handmade and carved by club member Robin Thorogood.

Meanwhile, the club’s internal competitions are now reaching their exciting conclusion, with the playoffs taking place in preparation for Finals Weekend at the end of August.

It has been a full and enjoyable summer for Herstmonceux Bowls Club, with plenty more bowling still to come before the season officially draws to a close on 20 September.

What a perfect evening for the annual Jim Crouch Memorial Cup match between Herstmonceux Bowls Club and Herstmonceux Cricket Club. 🎳🏏

Around 60 members from both clubs, together with members of the Crouch family, came along to remember Jim, who was a much-loved member of both clubs, and to enjoy another evening of friendly rivalry and great company.

After a closely fought match, Herstmonceux Bowls Club just edged the contest to retain the Jim Crouch Memorial Cup, which was presented by Jim's daughters, Vicki and Sarah. 🏆

The evening was rounded off with a delicious BBQ, a raffle and plenty of laughter. A huge thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it such a special occasion. It was a lovely evening, enjoyed by all, and a wonderful way to celebrate Jim's memory. 💚

Members of Herstmonceux Bowls Club are delighted that the 2026 season is now well under way, with a busy programme of friendly fixtures, league matches and games in the Sussex County League already being enjoyed by players throughout the club.

The Club’s Open Day, held at the end of April, proved a tremendous success and resulted in eight new members joining, bringing total membership to nearly 50. The club continues to attract players of all ages and abilities, helped by its warm and friendly atmosphere both on and off the green.

Club evenings, normally held on Monday nights, have also been met with great enthusiasm. As a build-up to the forthcoming American Tournament season, members have been taking part in enjoyable skills development sessions, followed by informal discussions on green etiquette, teamwork and communication.

A photograph accompanying this article shows Club Chairman Richard seated on a brand-new garden bench alongside Jackie Peek. The bench was kindly donated to the club this year by Jackie and her father, Terry Everingham, in memory of Jean Everingham, Terry’s late wife and Jackie’s mother, who sadly passed away last year. Jean was a much-loved and stalwart member of the club for many years, and the bench will serve as a lasting tribute to her memory.
