A BIG thank you from our President

Our President, Kathy Pease, would like to thank everyone for all their support in raising the magnificent sum of £1,256.72 for her nominated charity of View Craft. What a fantastic achievement for her first year in the role.

The total was derived from a series of events during the bowls season comprising of a Coffee morning, Sponsors Day, Presidents Day and the two yellow collection boxes together with a donation from the Club itself.

This is an amazing sum of money which will enable this locally run charity help even more visually impaired residents of Eastbourne & Wealden.

Well done everyone!

Sponsors Day - 31st August 2025

On a warm pleasant Sunday morning, with church bells ringing in the distance and a spitfire flying overhead, we commenced the day of bowls fun with a spider. All 30 contestants spread themselves around the edge of the green, eager to bowl a single wood at the jack in the centre. As the bell rang all 30 bowls were released at the same time heading to the middle of the green where one of the ladies from The Beauty Hand & Foot Spa picked up and settled on the jack, winning herself a box of chocolates.

8 of our sponsors entered this competition, and such was the enthusiasm to play that 2 of them fielded 2 teams. As all contestants were non bowlers, each team were assigned an experienced club member to help and guide them as well as a marker to skip from the head.

The contest was played over 4 rounds with a break for lunch halfway through, which was a tasty BBQ cooked to perfection by our members, all with food kindly donated by Epayroll UK Ltd.

A team of scorers gathered the scorecards after each round and kept a tally of the scores. While the points were being counted tea and handmade delicious cakes were served by our social team with a last opportunity to buy some raffle tickets, guess the name of the guide dog (in aid of our nominated charity) or guess the £50 note, which was won by one of the TPS plumbing team.

With only 1 point separating the top 3 teams the winners were announced as:-

1st Place = TPS plumbing (173 points)

2nd Place = Sussex IFA - A team (172 points)

3rd Place = The Beauty Hand & Foot Spa (171 points)

Congratulations and well done to all participants, who not only went away with a medal but also great memories of trying something new and knowing that they all played their part in raising £334 for our President’s 2025 chosen charity of VIEW Craft.

What a fun filled day with lots of laughter was had by all and is certain to become a regular event in our annual fixtures.

Ladies v's Gent's

As is tradition here at Hailsham Bowling Club we have an afternoon when the Ladies take on the Gents in a friendly competition of triples.

With a good turnout of 24 players, it was a perfect afternoon with a warm friendly atmosphere and temperature to match.

The spectators were treated to a great afternoon of bowling with the Ladies, despite winning on 2 rinks, narrowly missing out on the overall score which was Gents 63 and Ladies 58.

Well done to all who took part!

We are holding in our clubhouse a Coffee Morning on Friday 25th July from 10am to 12 noon to raise money for our chosen Charity for this year VIEW Craft (Visually Impaired Eastbourne & Wealden Craft).

This is a local charity based in Herstmonceux which some of our bowls club members have been involved in over the years both as volunteers and members. Representatives from the Charity will be coming along to display some of the items partially sighted people have made and maybe give a brief talk about the Charity.

Tea, Coffee and Cake will be served, so please come along and support this very worthy local charity. Everyone welcome!

President's chosen charity for 2025

Each year our President choses a charity to raise funds for during the playing season.

This year our new President, Kathy Pease, has announced that her chosen charity is VIEW CRAFT - (Visually Impaired Eastbourne & Wealden Craft) https://viewcraft.org/

This is an independent organisation that enables blind and partially sighted people to participate in arts & crafts. This is a cause Kathy is passionate about as she already gives up some of her free time assisting members with the making of all types of crafts, contributing to the running of the organisation and is a volunteer driver providing transport for any members living in rural areas.

Collection boxes will be available around the club with several events organised to raise much needed funds for this voluntary organisation. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

President's Day 21/09/2024

As is tradition, every year we hold a President's Day whereby the current President choses a charity that the club raises funds for. This year’s chosen charity was Alzheimer’s UK.

Unlike any other President’s Day, this year it fell on our President’s 90th birthday, so double celebrations were in order.

Thankfully the rain stayed away and we started the afternoon with a spider, where the 40 members present, many resplendent in their charity t-shirts, arranged themselves around the edges of the green and all bowled together on the count of 3 towards the jack placed in the centre. It was carnage as bowls were knocked in every direction before the winning shot settled on the jack, winning themselves a bottle of whisky, donated to the club.

After a friendly game of 15 ends, where our birthday girl showed us all just how good she can bowl at the magnificent age of 90, we retired for high tea of sandwiches and delicious cakes, served by our hard-working social team, followed by speeches, presentations and the raffle (where all prizes has been donated by the members).

To end a wonderful afternoon Dorothy thanked everyone for their kindness and generosity over the past 3 years of her Presidency, which is sadly coming to an end in November. She was then delighted to inform us that with just a few more donations to collect, so far we have raised more than £1,800.00 for this year’s good cause. The largest amount of money ever collected in the 101-year history of the club.

Well done everyone!

Hailsham House Challenge Trophy!

In celebration of our collaboration with Hailsham House Care Home this re-arranged event was supported by some of the residents & staff of Hailsham House, along with the Mayor and his wife.

In glorious sunshine our members took to the green, dressed in their fresh crisp whites for a perfect afternoon of bowling. Ten teams of 3 players battled it out over 2 rounds to earn as many points as possible, as the team with the highest score would win the brand-new trophy, especially commissioned for this event by Hailsham House. Whilst the scores were totalled to determine the winners, everyone enjoyed a delicious tea of cake & sandwiches freshly prepared by the chefs at Hailsham House.

Congratulations go out to the winners Team 6 of Catharina, Ginny & Steve, who were each presented their winners trophy by the Mayor Cllr Paul Holbrook, with every participant receiving a certificate designed by Hailsham House.

As ever there are HUGE thanks to all the members who give up their spare time to make events like this run smoothly from setting up the green and gazebos, manning the bar, serving food, washing up, running the raffle, scoring, organising the order of play and making the teas and coffees.

Well done everyone for making this day such a success and looking forward to many more collaborating years with Hailsham House.

Heartfelt condolences go out from the whole of Hailsham Bowling Club to the wife and family of Terry Tozer, Hailsham’s very own Town Crier, at his sudden and terribly sad passing.

We were privileged to meet & chat him when he joined us in June 2023 to open our special centenary match against the Chelsea Pensioners, with a rousing “Cry” and lots of laughter.

Rest in Peace Terry, you will be greatly missed.
