🔵 COACHING ANNOUNCEMENT 🟠

We’re delighted to welcome another fantastic addition to the club…

MICK STEPHENS

Mick joins us as our Strength & Conditioning Coach and brings a wealth of experience from both elite rugby and high-performance sport 💪🏼

Mick began his senior rugby career in 2011 as a back-row forward with Birmingham & Solihull Bees in National League 2, before moving to Moseley RFC in National League 1. He went on to enjoy an excellent playing career there, remaining with the club until injury forced his retirement in 2022.

Following his rugby career, Mick turned his attention to endurance sport and has since achieved remarkable success, setting a British record in the Hyrox Pro division and consistently ranking amongst the top 30 athletes in the world.

Alongside his own sporting achievements, Mick now coaches athletes across Europe in endurance sports, rugby, and Gaelic football. His expertise in strength and conditioning, performance development, and athletic preparation will be a huge asset to our players as we continue to build towards the new season.

Welcome to the club, Mick 💪🏼

🔵 COACHING ANNOUNCEMENT 🟠

We’re delighted to welcome two fantastic additions to the club…

MARK ‘EVO’ EVANS
JACK JOLLY

Evo and Jack join us as our Forwards and Backs Coaches respectively, and form a strong Coaching Group for the upcoming season 💪🏼

For Evo, this marks a welcome return to the club, having first joined as a Player/Coach back in 2015(ish). Before that, he made over 200 appearances for Moseley RFC, and still holds the record for most consecutive games. He also toured with England Counties in 2008.

He brings a wealth of coaching experience from roles at Sutton Coldfield, Bromsgrove, and North Mids, alongside his current position as Head of Sport at King Edwards Five Ways.

Jack comes off an excellent playing journey, developing through the youth system at Birmingham & Solihull Bees, where he debuted in 2011 and then become Club Captain in 2017.

Jack moved on to Birmingham Moseley in 2019, and now joins us fresh from their National 1 campaign, where he was a key figure as Vice-Captain and regular goal kicker. His leadership, consistency, and impact being critical throughout their recent survival.

This is a hugely positive step forward for the club, and we’re excited about what’s ahead for this coming season!

Welcome fellas 💪🏼

Ira Hampton – Old Halesonians RFC

The Old Halesonians Association and Rugby Club announce with sadness the passing of Ira Hampton, a founder member and stalwart of Old Halesonians Rugby Club. Ira passed away on the morning of 25 May 2026 at Mary Stevens Hospice, Stourbridge following treatment and care for cancer.

Ira played rugby for Old Hales for many years, a renowned player and first team Captain in 1963-64 and 1971-72. He was a hard playing, no nonsense Ho**er, who led from the front and was uncompromising in the way he always played the game. He also represented North Midlands/Worcester and Hereford at County level and played for Leeds University, St Helens and Lancashire when the family lived in the North.

In October 1972, Ira retired from playing first team rugby. He was by misfortune invited to attend a meeting at the North Midlands disciplinary committee at Tally Ho. In the bar afterwards he had a lengthy chat with Stan Whitfield and learned a great deal about the local C**ts scene. Many schools were ceasing to field rugby teams and those that did had many free dates.

Saturday morning jobs were now in vogue and young players were opting out. Also at club level both schoolboys and working boys could play together for a C**t XV if one existed. Ira was asked by Dai Davies, our old Sports master at H.G.S, now the Earls High School, to help him out refereeing Saturday morning 1st XV rugby matches.

Ira was amazed at the talent and keenness of these youngsters who were mostly 15 to 16 years old. In the changing room afterwards Ira explained that he had played for the school nearly 20 years before and had carried on playing at Newfield and then at Wassell Grove. Ira asked the team if they would like to play at Wassell Grove when the school had no fixtures.

A local trial match was arranged in December 1972. Using the Earls players and club members to spread the word, over 40 players attended the trial. Some had never played a game of rugby but most of them had played from the age of 11 at secondary school. There was no Mini rugby at this time, the present day Mini & Junior Rugby Section was developed from a C**ts section set up by Ira.

He had the vision and created a section for young boys direct from local schools’ rugby teams, predominantly the Halesowen Grammar School. Ira developed a brilliant youth section which was the catalyst for transforming young players into senior club players. He was a leading light in the development of youth rugby for which we are all proud.

Our club condolences go to the family at this sad time as we cherish the memories of this outstanding individual who has given his life to developing the game we all love so much. The funeral service for Ira will take place at Stourbridge Crematorium on Wednesday 17 June 2026 at 1140 hours followed by a gathering at Old Halesonians Association, Wassell Grove, Hagley DY9 9JP.

Some well-known faces from around the club are taking on 72 holes in one day… ⛳️

On 12th June, Jamie, Alex, Richard and Stephen will be tackling a golf marathon at Stourbridge Golf Club to raise money and awareness for Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

MND is a devastating disease that affects the brain and nerves, gradually taking away the ability to walk, talk and breathe. It’s a cause that has hit the rugby community particularly hard in recent years, with figures such as Rob Burrow and Doddie Weir helping to raise awareness through incredible courage and determination.

The challenge will test the lads physically and mentally, but they’re doing it to support vital research and help families affected by MND.

Any support, donation or share would be hugely appreciated.
There will be collection buckets on the bar at the club. 💙
