The 5 things that are ruining your fun at an off-road race!

Gloves - warm hands that work are great for clipping up your helmet and putting your shoes on/off.

Glasses - I always have a couple of cheap pairs of swappable lenses. RainX on them beads the water off so they work. Also not scratching your eyes with mud and grit.

Tyre choice and pressure - I've been lucky to find the tyres I like. Vittoria offer a different race/ training tyre for all surface types. Run them wide and low. 2.25-2.4 and 18-22psi. Check out SRAM Tyre pressure calculator to dial the right pressures in.

Clothing choice - layers. Think Shrek, we need layers. You can always take them off but if you're cold it's bloody grim.

Pre-ride - give yourself the time to ride the course so you know what's coming. Then you can always adjust tyre pressure. You also know if it'll be windy on the course if it's covered or not. You might be hesitant and want to save energy but not knowing the course will cost you more energy and spoil the fun.

Friends - bring or make a friend. Off-road hits different, less ego, more laughs, less pressure. I have met a lot of friends over the years who have helped me, shared our race story, shared their tyre choice and wisdom.

I know that's six but if you got this far, well done.

Thank you for a great day out again. I was on the other side of the tape but loved it just as much!

A bit silly but try, strength work on the bike isn't enough of a stimulus to get stronger in the way a proper program will be.

Over 3 years of strength work has helped me work through injuries faster and reduce my recovery times.

Everyone's plan might look different, or different weights. Don't compare yourself to someone you are not. Look up to people but not to equal them. Be inspired by them.

Having a different reach bike in just a few minutes can change everything!

The reach of the bike is the distance from the centre of your bottom bracket to the centre of your head tube.

Different bikes and manufacturers change these to suit their demographic. HOWEVER, imagine if you could change yours on your bike.

That's what Canyon have done. And I've seen similar, but with anglesets, done before but this was much needed for a tall rider in an XL Canyon MTB.

Would you want 5mm less or 5mm more?

The best things about being your own boss...

After a 40k ride home after their bike fit, my customer was left feeling better on their bike.

Although they didn't come in with lots of pains or problems, they left with an improvement.

Focussing on comfort, reducing unnecessary tension with the bike setup and not focussing on speed. Process goals work best.

Someone who is 199cm TALL, they had struggled with postural issues for a long time.

If you are tall, then get a bike fit.

Also if you are not tall, book a bike fit.

Josh popped in ahead of a trip to Cape and as he has been in to see me previously, something he said was nice to hear.

What we have done over the years with his position, accommodate previous injury history and new bikes is evolve. We haven't tried to reinvent anything, but just help him adapt to the changes of his body and bike over time.

A lot of people don't realise that their body changes. The discipline and demands from their bike also change.

We work through that with you.

I may jinx it but pop it and get fitted before the rain stops. You'll be glad you did when you get to the spring with a smug look on your face during those pain-free miles.

If you ever feel you're not smooth, not your normal mega training. The central nervous system can take a battering from work and life "stress" and then we try to add more by booking an event that you've got less than 16 weeks to train for.

Spin ups help engage the Central Nervous System, gets the body working together as a whole.

When 70.3's were way more chill. Check out the YouTube footage to see what got us all hooked on triathlon!

I've done triathlons for 18 years. Sprint. Olympic Distance. Half Ironman. Ironman and tough courses.

2025 - started so well. Newport Marathon 2:49 on my road marathon debut (not including Ironman distance triathlon).

Weeks before I had front of pelvic tension, in front of my left thigh/hip socket. It just felt like tightness. Saw the soft tissue guy and felt good for Reading Half with a PB of 1:17. All good.

A little more tension built before Newport but the week of, I had no niggles and few right as rain.

Newport - I had a good time on what felt like a bad day for me.

The next day - BAM. Couldn't load properly on my left leg

In the summer it has been a lot of start/stop, meaning trying to come back to running but within a few jogs (run walk following a 1:1 ratio) I seemed to take two steps back every time or every other.

MRI confirmed, labral tears and FAI cam Impingements on both hips.

I've continued to do strength with Gecko, Ainsley accommodating my hip.

Miles worked his magic to find the missing pieces that now feel like it's heading the right way. Stronger connection and hopefully on to faster times.

First race back was 2nd V40 in an off-road duathlon and PAIN FREE.

I've not had a steroid injection that was offered by the NHS. And hopefully now we don't need it!

No road is ever straight and smooth.

A walk that often ends in a smile.

Coffee.

Greeted with a smile regardless how busy they are, Alex is often sorting orders, or customers but always has time.

Today was a treat because I witnessed the warmth of the roaster and the smell from the beans in the cooling tray spinning around. Hypnotising me as though they know my morning routine. Knowing how much of a strong hold it has over me.

From Alex to Velo Clinic, fresh and local really doesn't seem like a big deal but roasted carefully within a mile of my house, and served to my customers only a few miles further away.

Everyone compliments the coffee but I can't take any glory for what Alex and his team do.

Check them out online or pop in to see them in the flesh (the people and beans/roaster).
