The 5 things that are ruining your fun at an off-road race!
Gloves - warm hands that work are great for clipping up your helmet and putting your shoes on/off.
Glasses - I always have a couple of cheap pairs of swappable lenses. RainX on them beads the water off so they work. Also not scratching your eyes with mud and grit.
Tyre choice and pressure - I've been lucky to find the tyres I like. Vittoria offer a different race/ training tyre for all surface types. Run them wide and low. 2.25-2.4 and 18-22psi. Check out SRAM Tyre pressure calculator to dial the right pressures in.
Clothing choice - layers. Think Shrek, we need layers. You can always take them off but if you're cold it's bloody grim.
Pre-ride - give yourself the time to ride the course so you know what's coming. Then you can always adjust tyre pressure. You also know if it'll be windy on the course if it's covered or not. You might be hesitant and want to save energy but not knowing the course will cost you more energy and spoil the fun.
Friends - bring or make a friend. Off-road hits different, less ego, more laughs, less pressure. I have met a lot of friends over the years who have helped me, shared our race story, shared their tyre choice and wisdom.
I know that's six but if you got this far, well done.
Thank you for a great day out again. I was on the other side of the tape but loved it just as much!
