A fantastic day on Saturday for putting Catfield Higashi firmly on the map.

We spent the afternoon training under a team of first-class instructors, four of whom were 7th Dan black belts, making it a great opportunity to learn and develop.

Two Catfield students attended alongside me. Clare Davies was assessed throughout the day and, as a result of her hard work and determination in some uncomfortably warm conditions, was awarded her Orange Belt.

Daryl Ross was also under scrutiny for the duration and, after returning to karate following a 25-year break and putting in six months of dedicated retraining, was officially awarded his Green Belt.

Both achievements are thoroughly deserved, and while Clare and Daryl are understandably proud of what they have accomplished, I am equally proud of them.

It was also a pleasure to see three former clubmates from my old Maldon club successfully complete their formal gradings and earn higher brown belt grades. Congratulations to Gabriel, Demi and Megan on their excellent performances.

A special thank you to John Spurgeon (5th Dan) from Maldon, who devoted so much time, energy and encouragement to Clare and Daryl throughout the day.

As always, it was lovely to catch up with friends from across the Higashi clubs around the UK. Days like these remind us that karate is about much more than grades alone – it's about shared effort, continuous improvement and being part of a wider community. πŸ‘πŸ₯‹

A bit of a draining session yesterday! William insisted that we use the exercise dice to decide our fate at the end of the first hour. That resulted in 60 lunges to start and 40 press-ups to finish, with all six faces of the exercise dice making an appearance along the way.
William was keen to bring out the legendary Dice of Doom, which goes all the way up to 100, but that one is reserved for special occasions and unsuspecting guests!
The rest of the session was packed with plenty of line work and Pinan katas, with everyone putting in a great effort throughout. Lots of focus, determination and steady improvement on display. Well done all. πŸ’ͺπŸ₯‹

A good, solid session of basics and kata yesterday, with everyone showing excellent focus and commitment throughout.

We also set aside some time to drill shuto uke in kokutsu dachi, first individually to refine technique and body movement, then in pairs with an attacker to develop timing, distance and application.

It's great to see the concentration and enthusiasm from everyone each week, and the steady progress that comes from consistent practice. Keep it up! πŸ‘ŠπŸ₯‹

May was a full month of karate for most of us, with plenty of hard work, learning, and progress along the way.
A particular highlight was a mid-month visit from our friends from Maldon Higashi, 5th Dan instructors Richard and Johnny. Their knowledge, technical expertise, and good humour brought an extra dimension to the session, giving everyone plenty to take away, work on, and think about.
What I continue to enjoy most is seeing the steady improvement in everyone week after week. Watching students grow in confidence, skill, and understanding makes all the effort worthwhile, and I hope those training with us are enjoying the journey just as much.
Thank you to everyone for your commitment and positive attitude throughout the month. Here's to more progress in June. πŸ‘ŠπŸ₯‹

Great session yesterday with a warm welcome to new joiner Finn β€” a great student already showing excellent attitude, focus, and positivity throughout training.

Another class with a strong focus on basics and kata, and it’s brilliant to see everyone continuing to improve week by week.

We were only missing AodΓ‘n, who was away at a wedding β€” hope you had a great time!

Even in the heat, a proper warm-up matters. We got the body moving first, then into solid basics with a real focus on strong, stable stances.
From there, it was kata timeβ€”plenty of repetition and refinement across Pinan Nidan, Pinan Shodan, and Kushanku. Good focus, good effort, and steady progress all round.

Saturday was all about sharpening the fundamentals.
We spent time drilling the Pinan kata, working solid kihon waza (basic techniques), and introducing Catfield Higashi to one-step sparring (kihon ippon kumite) β€” practising clear, effective defences against set attacks.

Really strong effort across the board and great progress from everyone.

Special mention to young William β€” his development is coming along brilliantly, and his focus and resilience are genuinely impressive. πŸ‘
