Past Captains Trophy and Ladies Western match
Friday 12th June saw 7 past Captains and the present Captain battle it out for a Silver Plate which unfortunately was a victim in last years trophy robberies. These were later joined for an excellent 3 course dinner by a further 6 past Captains in the restaurant with a few drinks and a bit of banter shared by all and of course remembering those absent friends, be they Captains or past members.
The “Trophy”, an antique bit of Perspex with a gold plastic golfer on it was presented to this winner Mr David Mills who scored 19 points in the 10 holes played, an ex-captain came 2nd with 18 points.
Thanks to Simon and the catering staff for a lovely meal and to Chris behind the bar for keeping us refreshed.
On Saturday 13th June the Ladies Western team travelled the 60 miles to Bramford, a small 9 hole course with lots of trees and water, the home team definitely had a home advantage and cruised to 5–0 victory with the home team ladies offering advice on each hole to the Gorleston players. Thanks to Mark and Linda who came along and caddied, the Gorleston team on the day was Marie, Gail, Laura, Pauline and Linda.

Howlett Smith away
This years 1st leg of the Howlett Smith was played in very windy conditions at Caister. A big thank you to David Gibbs who replaced myself at the last minute.
Although Gorleston only had one win out of the 6 matches played four of the matches were lost only 1 down on the day and with GM Matt Bowman and his partner in crime Josh Manser winning their match 4 up Gorleston came away with a respectable loss of 3 Down on the day with all to be played for later in the year at our place.

Presidents Day

A field of 82 participated in this years Presidents Day in an attempt to win the coveted Presidents Putter.

As well as the 7 Juniors who entered with the field still being a little short of full, the President agreed that Ladies would be allowed to enter for the first time as at the end of the day the Club President be it a He or She is President of the whole club and not just one section of it. As it was very short notice and a separate add on competition produced by Matthew the Ladies were invited on the basis of those who help out on these days and those who regularly play at weekends in the Monthly Medals and Stablefords, apologies to Kim Potter from me, it totally slipped my mind that you regularly play and I forgot to invite you.

A massive thank you to all that donated prizes and then bought raffle tickets to try and win back that bottle of Campari that’s been sitting in your drink’s cabinet for 10 years. A total of £400 was raised which will go towards the Presidents charity (Brake).

The results on the day were very close and all placings decided by countbacks, 3rd, 4th and 5th places all with 39 points went to Nick Bickers, Richard Old and Vince Fuller and the winner on the day was Tom Gardiner with 40 points (21 back 9) from Dave Punter also 40 points (20 on back 9). David Mills presented the Presidents Putter to Tom in front of a packed clubhouse.

Afterwards a splendid BBQ spread was laid on by the President and excellently delivered by Simon and the catering crew and normal thanks to Maggie and Marie for doing the raffle, to the ladies with drinks at the halfway house (Carol, Jackie & Shelley) and Howard and Matt for card distribution and result collation.

Gorleston Super Sixes at Halesworth

The third match of the Super Six series took place at Halesworth on Sunday 7 June 2026.

Our team of Oscar with Harley, Dotty with Harry, and Robin with Evan, achieved second place with 127 points. It was a tough match with the home team winning the day with 129 points.

Once again the golf was amazing, with some spectacular drives. The competition took place on the Valley Course and included some tricky holes. The putting was particularly tough, but the three teams proved their abilities under pressure by discussing their shots and achieving that great score.

The Skills for Life Medal went to the pairing of Oscar and Harley. Congratulations to you both.

Well done everyone, and thanks to our supporters.

Max Leuty Qualifies for Faldo Futures Final

Gorleston junior member Max Leuty has qualified for the national finals of the Faldo Futures competition, to be played at The Belfry during the 2026 British Masters.

Max shot an incredible gross one under par to come second in his age group.

After a great tee shot on the first, that unfortunately caught a cart path leading to a bogey 5, Max fought back to par the next two holes.

Incredibly, he then finished the round birdie, par, par, birdie, birdie finishing with a 35.

Max is looking forward to competing in the final and, taking part in a golf clinic hosted by Sir Nick Faldo.

Well done Max and good luck in the final.

Super Six Team Compete at Bungay

The second match of the 2026 Super Six season was held at Bungay on Sunday 31 May 2026.

Our team consisted of Red Pinder with Tommy, Loki Pinder with Evan Gallie, and Callum Bernard with William Lowe.

It was a tight match with our boys coming in third place with 123 points, just behind the joint winners of Bungay and Halesworth, who both achieved 126 points. Rookery and Dunston had 121 and 115 points respectively.

Gorleston remain 1 point ahead after the two matches.

The team of Callum and William achieved 46 points, the winning score of the day and were both awarded the Skills for Life Medal.

Once again the golf was amazing and all of our team did Gorleston proud with their knowledge of etiquette and respectful behaviour on the course.

As always, the support from our families is invaluable. Thanks to you all.

The atmosphere in the clubhouse after these matches is second to none, and a joy to be a part of.

Well done all!

PLATTEN TROPHY – 30/05/2026

The Platten Trophy was donated by Penny Platten to celebrate the Monthly Mixed Foursome’s Competition in the Ladies Centenary Year. A competition traditionally organised by the Ladies which over the years has been an important part of the Clubs Social Calendar. This year 18 teams took part, and the weather could not have been more perfect. The camaraderie between the competitors on and of the course was to be admired and such an important part of our Golf Club. The Competiton was closely fought and the winners with an enviable score of 42 points were Ann Amos and David Mills. In second place were Marissa Booth and Alex Reid with 39 points and 3rd place went to Janette Hetherton and Tony Jackson with 38 points. The prizes were presented by David Mills our President except for the Trophy when our Vice Captain stepped in to present to Ann and David. Many thanks to Janette and Tony for organising and encouraging such a Large field and to Mike Amos for the results.

Haskell Trophy

Amazing stuff from the Gorleston Ladies

Following on from re-entering the Interclub Ladies Scratch KO last year with the club now having a few players who can hold their own against mostly lower handicap opponents this years pairing of Jules Harbord and Marie Norman took to the course in very high temperatures and the possibility of 36 holes in that heat with the ever present Gorleston breeze, the one with all Par 3’s into it. Gorleston’s opponents were 2 young Ladies from Diss whose handicaps were slightly lower than the Gorleston girls.

The morning round saw Gorleston dominate with them ending it 4 up with the afternoon session to come. From the restart Diss immediately reduced the deficit to 3 and Gorleston snatched the 4-hole lead back on the 2nd. The 4th was won by Diss and the first mention to our wonderful members, Steve Hall and Mark Morgan who stood aside to let the ladies through on the 5th. The 6th hole was won after a catalogue of errors from both teams but Diss taking 4 to get out of the front left bunker on 6 allowed Gorleston to back to 4 up. A superb 15-foot putt on 7 saved Diss from going 5 down but that only lasted until the next hole with Jules holing a 12-footer for birdie after perfect drive and then approach shot from Marie.

5 up with 10 holes to play sounds as if it’s in the bag but Diss had other ideas, winning the 9th & 10th holes to drag it back to 3 up in Gorleston favour. Diss won the 12th and into the tropical field with air temperatures about 30C and the Gorleston girls feeling a different kind of heat as well. Gorleston emerged from the field 3 up with 4 to play after winning the 14th and looked certain to be victorious whilst in Hopton.

However, Diss had other ideas and produced an approach shot to 18 inches for a birdie on 15 which was holed to win after a great 2 putts for par by Gorleston. A second thanks now goes to Tony Ludlam’s 3 ball who very kindly stood to the side halfway up 16 to allow the match to proceed without delay, a hole that was halved leaving the match Dormie 2.

Another great approach shot to the 17th by Diss allowed them to take the match down the 36th hole, both pairs drove the dip leaving 190 yard approach shots to the green, Diss stuck theirs pin high 15 feet from the hole, Gorleston however suffered immense bad luck when their ball stuck halfway up the face of the front left bunker, good luck as it didn’t incur a £1 fine for “Captain’s Bunker” but bad luck as they couldn’t get it on the green after 2 attempts.

All Square, play-off hole time and a third thank you to Jason who was due to be teeing off at 17.36 but allowed the ladies through. For the first time in 37 holes the Gorleston ladies had some support from those enjoying the bar refreshments on the patio but unlike the Diss entourage who walked the 1st play-off hole our support remained safely behind the toughened glass to view from approximately 300 yards. 2 good teeshots and an excellent 2nd from Jules left Marie with a putt for glory but unfortunately it missed and as Diss failed to par the hole Jules rolled in the winning putt for an excellent victory.

This is truly a great achievement; the Ladies will be away to either Stowmarket or Halesworth in the quarter finals.

Ladies victorious in first leg of the Howlett Smith

The ladies played the opening leg of the annual Howlett Smith match against Caister at home and produced an excellent performance.

Despite the challenge of assembling a full team, 10 ladies took to the course and played with great determination against a side known for its strength and experience.

Played in fine conditions, the course was in excellent shape and provided the perfect setting for a competitive and enjoyable match.

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a wonderful lunch in a warm and friendly atmosphere, and attention now turns to the second leg in September, when the team will travel to Caister looking forward to the next challenge with a 3-hole lead.

Success For Gorleston’s Super Six Team

The first match of the 2026 Super Six season was played at Gorleston Golf Club on Sunday 11 May. To set the scene, it was bitterly cold and one of our windiest days so far this year. But that did not deter the young teams of six, from Bungay, Halesworth, Rookery, Dunston and Gorleston, from playing some exceptional golf.

Each club sends a team of six players, from a squad of 12, to participate in home and away matches during the summer months, culminating in the final game at Gorleston in September. The format is a 2-ball Texas Scramble, and so the perfect introduction for these youngster to competitive golf. Our team, of three pairs, were Red Pinder with Harley Currell, and Loki Pinder with Callum Barnard, and Robin Greaney with Tommy Mills.

It was a tight match, and a steep learning curve for quite a few entering their first competition, but all were keen to observe the rules of etiquette, speed of play and the pleasure and disappointments of competitive golf.

The results were, Bungay with 117 points, Dunston 118 points, Halesworth 120 points, Rookery 124 points and Gorleston a winning 125 points. A very close contest and a great start to the season for Gorleston!

At every competition, a player from each team is awarded a ‘Life Skills Medal’ and at this event it was awarded to Loki Pinder. Well done Loki!

Congratulations to our professional team of Duncan and Oli, who have produced an excellent squad to represent our club.

Our thanks to parents, guardians and friends for your support.

Also, a mention to some of our previous Super Sixes who volunteered to help. Max Farman, Noah Richardson and Harry Page, your help was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Also my thanks to Marie Norman for safeguarding and being there. Thanks also to Cliffy, our Club Captain and David, our Club President, for your company and support on our first match.
