Martham & District Angling Club

Martham & District Angling Club This is the new page for Martham & District Angling Club. On it you will find Match Results There is even a Springtime League purely in the PIts.

Martham & District Angling Club was formed in 1984 with the break up of the old Hemsby Vikings Angling Club. The new club carried on the fishing rights to Martham Pits which it still has today, but due to the fantastic work of our members over the years it is a very different place to what it was 30 years ago. The club has always had a continual restocking program at the Pits and It's hard to beli

eve that the first Carp were were put in in 1986, but are now the most prolific species in the Pits growing to over 20lb. This year we tried to get back to basics and over £5000 of Tench and Bream were stocked making the Pits an all round Fishery. The Club runs various Match Leagues including Coarse, Sea and Pike depending on the seasons, but there are various Coarse match leagues including Winter, Summer and Evening Leagues. The Club also has Boats on Rollesby Broad which are kept at the Sailing Club. Any Club member wishing to use one should contact Russel Smith first. At least twice a year the club has official away trips the last one being last Sunday to Decoy Lakes, Whittlesey, which was enjoyed by every one who attended, especially as the cost of the trips include a full English Breakfast and a Sunday Roast after the match. So it's easy to see with all that the club has to offer why the waiting list is so long. Also we want to make this a real Club page so any member can send us the photo's of their catches and we will post them on this page for you.

The first of the 3hr river evening series last night, fishing the pegs behind the pits on a very pleasant evening.

Nine on and all hoping for a few skimmers and bream, the stretch has been dredged early this year between the ferry and dungeon corner, so it was a bit of a lottery if they’d show or not.

Chippy Chaplin is obviously back and on the obligatory end peg 12, when he’s not rinsing pensioners on carp lakes he’s taking the river boys to the cleaners! Chippy’s 13lb 4oz comfortably enough for the win on the night, well done mate,

In second from the other end peg 1 was Chippy’s travelling partner Wayne Reeve, imagine that, an end peg each and places 1 and 2! Wayne with 8lb 14oz.

In third, an ounce behind Wayne, was Mick Rose, the only out and out river angler to make the frame with 8lb 13oz from peg 10.

Well done all competing, great to see a few skimmers, looks like they were all along and with the usual roach and rudd to back up weights, it looks like a good match to kick the series off.

Well done all competing and thanks to Martin for organising and weighing in.

Upcoming matches…

Thursday 18th regular swindle, draw 8:30 fishing 8:30 to 3:30.

Thirteen on SL8 at Meadow Farm today and it looks as though the place has fished really well.

Golden Peg was peg 2 which is usually a pretty good area, Andy must’ve thought he had a chance off there but you really wanted to be from the point and round a few pegs.

Kev Clarke is fine form, wining Tony’s memorial match at Holly Farm last Thursday with 90lb, today he’s followed that up with a staggering 221lb 15oz from peg 5! Well done mate a busy old day that and radox bath tonight.

Another form angler in second, Stuart Leisi with 158lb 5oz from peg 6, and Wayne the frame Eden completing it with 154lb 1oz from peg 13.

Cracking days sport for all competing really, another three ton plus weights outside the frame everyone has managed a few, great to see. Big thanks to Kevin for organising and weighing in and well done all competing.

Upcoming matches…

Tuesday 16th June, MADAC evening river series match 1 on the Thurne behind the pits, draw in the pits car park 5pm, fishing 5:30 to 8:30pm.

Attention those anglers intending to fish the Tuesday evening series on the Thurne behind the pits.

The EA haven’t strimmed anywhere as yet, we don’t know if they will before the 16th. It would be sensible to take some shears and/or a reed cutter with you if you have them.

The swindlers took themselves off to Holly Farm for today’s match to fish as a memorial for much missed member Tony “Twonets” Eustace.

Tony’s lovely wife Sandra had also donated some prizes for the competitors, three trays of Tony’s paste rigs and a 12’ carbon active feeder rod. Very much appreciated Sandra, thank you on behalf of the club and all the lads.

Only eleven on the match, it should’ve been twelve but one member, who shall remain nameless, was grounded by Mrs Rouse ahead of their holiday. So eleven it was, a nice number to peg as there’s 22 available pegs giving the members at least one empty peg beside them.

Holly Farm is a lovely little venue and one where Tony himself enjoyed plenty of success, I recall him winning from peg 10 in the bowl and his favourite, peg 7, all using his famous paste of course, always hard to beat was Twonets.

The pegs in the hat for the match were 1,3,5,7,9,10,12,14,16,18 and 20. Bob Pearce drew the MOs peg and handed him number 5, a lovely draw full of features. Bob unfortunately unable to fish due to a bad back.

Other notable pegs had some superstars on them, in form peg 3 had super Kev Clarke on it, peg 7 had the pleasure of the bookies favourite Craskey. Stuey on peg 10 in the bowl and Andy the meat Holland with loads of room to the island on 20, hopes were high for a decent match.

Weights weren’t quite as good as we’d hoped though, despite the room, there’s been a temperature dip and lots of cold water has gone in over the last week, but I still thought it would’ve been better.

Peg 3 has won a few of the matches here recently, usually on the tip, and Kev Clarke made no mistakes catching good stamp fish steadily all match for 90lb 10oz, and not a tip rod in sight! All Kev’s fish fell to corn or paste on the pole.

Nearly half the weight of Kevin in second, Holmesy on peg 5 weighed 49lb 6oz thanks almost entirely to the last 90 minutes, the features held no fish and all of his weight came from carp on his skimmer line on soft pellets.

The bookies favourite Craskey completing the frame from peg 7 with another late show giving him 43lb 13oz of tip fish from the edges.

A cracking day out despite the weathers best efforts to dampen the spirits.

At the payout, the pegs went back in the hat, Kev, the winner on the day, drew peg 7 and Craskey added a tray of Tony’s rigs to his third place. In turn Craskey drew peg 5 and Holmesy helped himself to a tray too! Holmesy then drew peg 12 and John Bond has the last tray of rigs and he in turn drew peg 10! Unbelievable our Stuey, even when he loses he wins one of Tony’s feeder rods! It was a great laugh and Tony would’ve loved it without a doubt.

Thanks to Pete Harwood for booking the venue and the swindlers for paying for the match. Holmesy for running it and Kev, Andy and Stuey for weighing in. Special thanks again to Sandra and Tony’s family and the kind donations, it meant a lot for us all.

Tuesday 16th, MADAC evening river series match 1. Draw in the car park at 5pm fishing 5:30 to 8:30. Don’t forget your own nets!

Nine on the final spring evening series on the pits, hopefully they dodged the worst of the storms and showers!

The fish appeared to be further up, low number draws all struggled. In top spot with 29lb 10oz was Mick Rose on peg 14. Nice to see peg 12 back in a bit of form, Gary second from it with 29lb 2oz. Dave Cholerton third with 24lb 8oz from peg 18.

Cracking weights for a 3 hour sprint, but a long wait if you’re not on a few. I’ll get the series winners sheets together later today ahead of the river evening series which starts next Tuesday, thanks to Martin for organising and weighing in and well done all, it’s been a decent series overall.

Upcoming matches…

Thursday 11th, Tony Twonets memorial match at Holly Farm, draw 8:30, fishing 9:30 to 3:30. MATCH FULLY BOOKED

Sunday 14th, SL8 at Meadow Farm, draw 9am fishing 10 to 4pm, please book on with Kev Tear.

Only seven on today’s swindle, one or two regulars in the treatment room plus a windy showery forecast putting some off.

The MO was a little behind time and with only a handful it was decided we’d have a walk off.

Guess who got the first choice? No, not Stuey but Holmesy, he took a punt on 20 thinking he’d have the reed feature to himself and was sure the others would avoid the worst of the wind picking pegs below the blockhouse. Mick Rose chose 12, Dave C 11, Barry peg 3, Stuey 10, Dave B 8 and Rousey on 14.

Stuey had a steady start but an absolute rocket last hour and a half, shredding the match with 62lb 10oz. Dave C second from 11 with 26lb 10oz and that wily old fox with 23lb 5oz for third from peg 14.

A stand out weight for Stuey, Rosey joining the peg 12 DNW club and Holmesy’s gamble bombed, still a day out with mates takes some beating.

The swindlers will need a new MO after next Thursday as Holmesy runs off to the rivers, a “volunteer” will be sorted at the next match.

Upcoming matches…

Tuesday 9th final pits evening series on C pit. Draw 5pm fishing 5:30 to 8:30pm. Please no fishing C pit after 4pm.

Thursday 11th Tony Twonets memorial at Holly Farm. Draw 8:30, fishing 9:30 to 3:30. The match is fully booked.

Sunday 14th SL8 at Meadow Farm. Draw 9am fishing 10 to 4pm, please book in with Kevin when he posts.

Ten fished A pit yesterday evening, the showers holding off for the penultimate match of the pits spring series.

Fished in two sections, pegs 2-6 and 8-13 leaving out 12. A fairly busy 3 hours for most with almost half the field making double figures.

Stuart Leisi took top spot again, I always think peg 11 looks better than it is but he made short work of it netting a creditable 14lb 15oz off it. In second was John Kiernan, backing up his win from last Sunday with 11lb 15oz from peg 8. Steve Rouse, another one in a good vein of form, completing the frame from peg 10 with 11lb 7oz.

It was very close, Craskie aside, in the first section. Literally 9 ounces separating pegs 2,4,5,6, only the bookies favourite on A3 making double figures in that section.

Thanks to Martin for organising the matches and weighing in and well done all taking part. The final match of the pits series takes place next week on C pit before the river evening series starts the week after on the glorious 16th.

Upcoming matches…

Thursday 4th of June, regular swindle, draw 8:30 fishing 9:30 to 3:30, apologies if the MO is a little late for this one, the timings may need to go back a bit.

Tuesday 9th, final pits series match on C pit, draw 5pm fishing 5:30 to 8:30.

Gloomy skies above and beyond Martham. Thankfully, the rain stayed off in this evening's match on A Pit.
