It is with a genuinely shocked, sickened, gutted & an immensely saddened heavy heart that I need to pay tribute to our vibrant, funny, caring & still so young Matt Ireland, as the horrific news broke last night of his passing after a battle with ill health in ICU.
Some people may say the team may not have really existed since the exit of BTCC in 2012, and that may be 1% right. However what is 100% right is that when you’ve been a part of that journey, part of that camaraderie, part of that passion, part of that family - you & your part in the team live forever. Matt was, & always will be, a part of Team ES Racing.
Now since 2012 I’ve only seen Matt & Charlie a couple of times, but we’ve remained in touch. Matt was even sending me condolences regarding the death of my 13 year old dog, literally 3 weeks ago & just 48 hours before being admitted to hospital. We chatted only last month about how you see those people moving to Spain on “A place in the sun” & he said to me “we’re the kind of people that should do that”.
We had that relationship & friendship where you could just chat & message & it was just like yesterday.
However in 2012 we spent a lot of time together at race weekends. Matt was a vibrant, caring, funny part of the team. He took great pride in being involved & absolutely loved supporting his (then) girlfriend (now wife) Charlie with her role in the team. His care, dedication love & pride for her was clear for all to see, & always remained so.
Sometimes you just feel sick & deflated. Now is absolutely one of those times. There is no rhyme or reason why this should have happened, but it has.
All we can do is send genuine sincere love & kind thoughts to Matt, Charlie & all of his friends & family.
He joins a few other team mates in the sky, I just hope they’re keeping the pit lane ready for us.
RIP Matt Ireland, Sir.
