“It’s a losing sport. You get beaten a lot and you start to question everything: ‘Am I doing it right?’, ‘Am I good enough?’"

Find out why riders can be particularly susceptible to mental health problems and what you can do to help.

1. Winning is rare According to sport psychologist Michael Caulfield, a former PJA chief executive and a director of Sporting Edge, winning is rare in any equestrian discipline. Winter robs us of both light and time. As horse owners, we know that yard chores still need doing, no matter what - we just need to speed up!

Here are 5 time-saving tips for equestrians on a light and time budget.

1️⃣ Invest in a head torch: fumbling around in the dark will slow you down. Look after your eyesight and speed up your chores with help from a head torch. 🔦

2️⃣ Maximise your spare time: get ahead at the weekend by making up feeds or pre-filling hay nets.

3️⃣ Set some alarms: stay focused by setting alarms for when you should have completed a particular job at the yard. ⏰

4️⃣ Time your yard tap: instead of watching water buckets fill up, time your tap so you can get on with something else without the bucket overflowing!

5️⃣ Dry your horse faster: no one wants to waste time waiting for their horse to dry so they can tack up or rug up for the night. A good quality cooler or wicking fleece will help speed up drying.

If you suffer from back pain then you're not alone. Lower back pain is more prevalent in riders than the non-equestrian population.

A study of elite Dressage riders found that many of them are competing while experiencing chronic pain. Riding in a GP saddle, rather than a western saddle, and shorter stirrups can also exacerbate the pain.

You don't have to live with the pain though. There are many ways to address the root causes of the problem: muscle tightness, a weak core, and asymmetry.
