Great Hampden Cricket Club

Great Hampden Cricket Club A friendly village based club playing in the Kookaburra Mid Bucks League. Welcoming New Players, Scorers, Tea Makers, and Umpires of all ages and abilities.

In its beautiful, rural setting Great Hampden’s cricket ground is so classically English you might half expect Miss Marple to cycle by, turn at the pub and down to the church. The location is one reason why playing there is special. Another is the history. It’s amazing how big a mark this tiny settlement has made on the world – chiefly because of the 17th Century Parliamentarian John Hampden who o

wned the estate. His famous refusal to pay King Charles I’s Ship Money tax sparked the Civil War. This role in the rise of Britain’s democracy is remembered in many places – Scotland’s national stadium Hampden Park, and Hampden settlements in Massachusetts, Australia and New Zealand. It seems amazing that Zimbabwe is about to move its capital from Harare to a village called Mount Hampden. Hampden’s cricket club is said to have been founded in the 1880s though it’s likely that informal games were played on the Common well before. In 1894 GHCC took part in the inaugural ‘Bucks Rural League’ and a report of the time tells how they were beaten by Great Kingshill – a team Hampden still plays over 120 years on! GHCC then joined the Wycombe and District League – one of the first to be formed in the South of England. The club soon began to emerge as a force at village level, as is evidenced by the photos of proud, trophy-holding teams in the village hall. Hi everyone. Just a quick update—Great Hampden Cricket Club’s square has had its final autumn maintenance, including new seed and fertiliser. While these products are safe, they are not intended for large quantities of consumption by animals, so please keep this in mind if you’re walking your dogs on the common over the next few weeks. Many thanks GHCC
