Bowden Cricket Club

Bowden Cricket Club We operate in a friendly but competitive atmosphere, have a wide spectrum of membership, from junior We are an ECB Clubmark accredited Club.

We have three Senior Sides that play in the Northamptonshire Cricket League. The villages of Great Bowden and Little Bowden, Leicestershire are separated by the River Welland and both about the town of Market Harborough. In 1882, both villages formed a cricket team and for well over a century each Club went their separate ways, playing friendly fixtures at weekends against local village opposition

in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. Records show that the first game between Great Bowden and Little Bowden took place in 1883. However, a challenge from Little Bowden was declined in 1884 when Little Bowden could not raise a team from inhabitants of the village. This was apparently an important rule of village cricket in those days. After various homes around the village, Great Bowden Cricket Club took up a base at the Great Bowden Recreation Ground at some time before 1923. The Club played from a wooden pavilion situated on the southern boundary of the ground from 1967. Little Bowden Cricket Club had a home at Little Bowden Recreation Ground for much of its life, before moving to Symingtons Recreation Ground in Market Harborough in the late 1970's. Great Bowden moved to play league cricket in the early 1990's, whilst Little Bowden found it a struggle to continue to put out sides for both Saturday and Sunday friendly games. As Great Bowden progressed in the Northamptonshire Alliance Cricket League, the Club looked to run a league second eleven. However, difficulties were experienced in recruiting players. Talks were entered into between the Clubs' and the decision was taken in 1997 to form the one Club, Bowden Cricket Club, to play at Great Bowden Recreation Ground. The amalgamation of the two clubs has been a success. Bowden Cricket Club now runs four senior sides each week during the season and also has thriving junior section with that alone having over 100 members. The Club's members, with help from the local community, raised funds to replace the wooden pavilion with a new modern building, in 2005. New members of all standards are always welcome to join us.

Bowden second XI travelled to Old Northamptonians on Saturday. Winning the toss Bowden elected to bat first. With a slightly rearranged batting order Bowden got off to a steady start, but an indifferent wicket and some good bowling spells no batter could find their rhythm. The top 7 all getting to double figures but no one going on to get a big score. Bowden finished their innings on what seemed a reasonable score of 207. In reply Tariq scored just 1 run from his first 11 balls then appeared to decide a change of plan was required scoring 16 runs of his next 6 balls this is how his innings flowed on the way to scoring 101. Bowden never had the control required to exploit the wicket and ON’s knocked off the runs just 5 wickets down in 38 overs. A disappointing loss for Bowden who hope to bounce back at home against Old on Saturday.

🏏 Bowden CC 1st XI hosted Overstone Park CC 2nd XI, looking to gain revenge from their meeting earlier in the season. Bowden won the toss and chose to bat, a decision they were regretting when reduced to 5-2. However, the in-from Archie Powell and Fran Finnemore managed to steady the ship until Finnemore fell for 17. Powell was joined by Jack Bellamy, and the pair accelerated, finding the boundary with ease and forming a partnership of 57. Powell was ultimately dismissed for 57, bringing Alex Frith to the crease who scored a quick 30 to propel Bowden to a strong total of 225-6, aided massively by Bellamy’s 75 not out.

In reply, the visitors lost early wickets to the young opening bowling pair of OJ Lawrence and Ethan Mercer. Dylan Pearson reinforced Bowden’s advantage with a quick run-out and two wickets with the ball during an economic spell (10-1-25-2). Skipper Harry Wilford benefited from more excellent fielding from Pearson, as he claimed three wickets late on to ultimately give Bowden a 91 run victory. Bowden are now third in NCL Division 3 and look forward to an away fixture at Old CC next week.🏏

🏏 Bowden 3rds, a blend of youth and experience, were hosted by Isham 2nd XI at their impressive ground. Thanks to our opponents for a good game, played in great spirits.
Stand-in Captain Tim Parsons won the toss and made the seemingly controversial decision to bowl first. Isham moved to 40-0 after 10 solid, but unspectacular overs from Parsons Senior and Junior. Enter the wiley wheelie Wilson - the usual mixture of deliveries played with the batter’s minds. Runs became increasingly hard to come by as Wilson, supported by Ollie Horne, Bertie Blagburn (5-0-18-1) and Oscar Harrison (6-1-26-3, including 3 wickets in his first 7 balls). Wilson was the pick of the bowlers as he finished with 10-2-22-4, leaving Isham at 95-8. Some late hitting by the impressive Dom Bishop (45 off 34) saw the innings end at 157-8.
Rob Gomez (35) and Jamie Horne (21), supported by runner Rich King due to an earlier thigh strain, started solidly to reach 71-0 off 16 overs. All seemed on track until the introduction of spinner Viral Shah (4-18) and David Bishop. 71-0 quickly became 87-5 - the game was in the balance. Enter Rich King and Oscar Harrison. The combination of testing the field with quick 1’s and 2’s, combined with the occasional boundary, kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely. Controlled batting saw Bowden reach the target with 11 balls to spare. A great closing partnership of 74, with King (25no) and Harrison (45no).
Another solid team performance 🏏
