We are heartbroken to say that last week, the New Hill House yard family lost one of its brightest lights.
Harry Douglas passed away after a tragic motorcycle accident, aged only 19.
Harry had been a firm staple at our yard for many years, as a rider and owner, but also as a helper in the school, working on the yard, and generally doing everything anyone ever asked of him.
He joined the yard full-time a couple of years ago, when he purchased the legendary Dave, and has been here with his mum Lauren and his sister Belle ever since. Having brought Libby to the yard last year and more recently also taking on Polly, Harry was determined to bring the very best out of his mares over the next year.
You might have met him helping with leadrein lessons, tacking up your pony for you, or hanging out with his horses. You might have seen him as an impromptu groom when the team were out competing - always quick, always competent, never phased by anything, he was the dream to have at a busy show with you.
But most likely, you'll have seen him supporting Belle. In any weather and any time of day, Harry's determination to see her succeed at her goals was unwavering. Every lesson, every show, every day he was there to groom the horses, encourage, support, dry tears, muck out, or do anything needed to help her succeed. Always with a quip, a winning smile, and occasionally a grumble that was so good-natured even he couldn't take it seriously.
He was completely devoted to his family, his horses, and his partner Josh, and we'll keep his dreams of success for Belle & his horses going for him.
We have so many stories of him, we don't even know where to start.
The time he rescued a sheep from a ditch because he could never see an animal afraid or hurt. Barefoot, because he didn't want to get his shoes wet.
The time he had a little rave at the busiest show of our year, in the middle of the storm, with 40 horses and riders stressed to the max around him. Harry and the horse in his care? Cool as cucumbers.
The time his mum's car broke down and he, without batting an eyelid, gave her his indefinitely so she could keep up their routines.
