Our next committee member is our Social Secretary, Thomas (he/him)

Degree?
Medical Sciences 4th year

Event(s)?
800m

What was your first experience of athletics?
Getting disgracefully drunk at the welcome week bbq, but thankfully no one judged too much!

What strengths do you bring to your committee role?
I’m outgoing and friendly, and always keen for a night out 🕺🏻🍻

Now for our Publicity and Vice-Social Secretary, Luke (he/him)

Degree?
4th Year English Literature

Event(s)?
100/200/possibly 400m this year!

What was your first experience of athletics?
I’ve done it all the way through school, but my first age-group competition was my best early memory! I’d only ever run on grass tracks, so getting to run my favourite race, the 200m, on a proper all-weather track was amazing, and definitely helped me perform better in my events that day.

What strengths do you bring to your committee role?
After three years at the club, with experience as a coach and as social sec, on the publicity front I can bring together all the sides of the club and show it off to our members and wider community. I’m also keen to have a proper social scene back, and to help Thomas with organising that side of the club!

Favourite recipe?
Spaghetti bolognese, for uni at least! Nicked my recipe off BBC Good Food and changed it up to my taste, it’s unbeatable!

Next up we’d love to introduce our 2021/22 Welfare and Inclusivity Officer, Connie (she/her)

Degree?
Infectious diseases (3rd year)

Event(s)?
New to the 800m but still love a good 60m

What was your first experience of athletics?
Edinburgh Uni Athletics club is super friendly! I was a member of my local athletics club in Brighton. I initially went to a long distance group but became too lazy for that so joined a sprint group. Since being at Edinburgh university, I have started to love the longer stuff so much more.

What strengths do you bring to your committee role?
I would like to think that I am friendly, kind and approachable.

With the new academic year coming up, we’d like to introduce your EUAC committee members for 2021/22!
First up is our Alumni Officer, Hannah (she/her)

Degree:
Immunology with Business

Event(s):
800 meters and 3000 meters

What was your first experience of athletics?
My first experience of the club was coming to the (rainy) welcome week barbeque in first year. We were all huddled in somebody’s flat trying to escape the rain, all getting to know each other. I was so nervous about meeting new people, but everybody was so friendly and really encouraged me to keep coming to the socials and training sessions.

What strengths do you bring to your committee role?
I’ve been a member of the club since my first year, so I’ve been lucky enough to get to know many of our former club members over the years. I’m really looking forward to staying in touch with old members and keeping them up to date on the club’s accomplishments, as EUAC continues to grow and achieve even more this year!

Top cooking tip:
Always keep an emergency pack of quorn nuggets in the freezer; they can fix any thing any time of day!

Chloë joined the club in her first year and has now been a member for 5 years! She had a great year last year as the clubs Social Secretary and is now co-leading the club as our Female Captain this year🏃🏼‍♀️

Scott joined the club in his first year and has been a member for 4 years! He took on the responsibility as the clubs Competition Secretary last year and did a fantastic job🏅This year he has been our very first Welfare and Inclusivity Officer😁

“Colours reward those individuals have given time and effort above and beyond the call of duty to their chosen sport or Club.”

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH: HEALTHCARE🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 This week’s topic is healthcare, and will be looking into the historic discrimination faced by gay and bisexual men with regards to blood donation. This post is by no means extensive, but hopefully provides a brief summary of some of the key dates and policies changes which have allowed progress to be made. More still needs to be done to provide equal access to blood donation, and you can head to ‘Stonewall - Freedom to Donate’ to read more on the topic!

As part of our collaboration with to celebrate the LGBTQ+ history, this post will be highlight some of the historic pioneers of the q***r music scene. This is by no means an exhaustive list (there are so many examples of artists and songwriters who have contributed to and shaped q***r music culture) but this post provides a quick overview of some of the milestones we often don’t hear about!

Feel free to DM any suggestions/content you’d like covered in the coming weeks! 😊

As part of the People of EUSU and the Let’s Talk Mental Health and Wellbeing Campaign, we’ll be sharing stories and advice surrounding mental health and wellbeing from some of our club members. With the current covid situation, this month’s campaign is hugely important and we hope that these posts, as well as those on the SU’s page, can encourage conversations surrounding mental health.

🤩🤩 First up... is our Sprints Secretary Alisa Gault 🤩🤩

‘I’m on a very social course and rely on regularly seeing people to cope with the usual stresses of uni... When this was no longer an option, I knew I had to do something to keep myself occupied and in touch with people! Fortunately, sport has been a great coping mechanism for me as I am luckily still able to train. I also try to get fresh air every day as it is too easy to not go outside for days at a time which never helps anything! To check up on my friends, I make sure to drop them a message every couple of days to hear what they have been up to, and enjoy making big plans with them for when we get more freedom. I think having things to look forward to is important to staying optimistic during times like this so I definitely recommend planning some fun things to do for next year. Each day I also try to think of one positive thing, be it news or an achievement and this helps to remind myself that not everything is doom and gloom :))’

📣COACHES PROFILES📣

Meet CONNOR

1) Coaching experience/level/speciality?
- Level 3 Event Group Sprints and Hurdles Coach, 8 years experience (Started 2012) a season as team manager and a season as coaching coordinator

2) Home clubs/previous clubs/other jobs as a coach?
- Home club, Cardiff AAC

3) Favourite part of coaching?
- My favourite part of coaching is working with a range of athletes and finding ways to support them all in their development through athletics, and outside of athletics. Seeing athletes develop the confidence in their own abilities and knowledge of their event

4) Favourite memory as a coach?
- The best memory as a coach as the first time one of my athletes took a national gold medal after working with her for around 3-4 years from the moment she entered the sport. Seeing her face win the medal was amazing

5) Favourite session to give your athletes and why?
- Fox and Hound sessions, it's just fun to see the competition between athletes in the sessions

6) Top 3 excercises or stretches that you would recommend all athletes to work on and why?
- Side shuffle/ski walks with glute bands, really good activation work before a sprint session
- Posture walks, slow drill focusing on technical development. Very basic, foundational drill but one that should be done all the way through an athletes career
- Box jumps, staple of all good plyometric sessions

7) Sporting background when you were younger?
- Sprinting, 100m and 200m, football, volleyball, tried a few sports at a range of levels

8) What are you most looking forward to this year in EUAC and why?
- I'm looking forward to being able to support athletes back into sport, both as new starters to athletics and people returning from the sport
