Saturday wasn’t the greatest weather for the gruelling Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge, but a group of 12 super heroes from Jerry Green Dogs were guided across the mountains, the first of my events thisyear.

At last, after years of trying, I managed to capture an image of the illusive Bittern. Just as the sun came out it appeared from one side of the reeds, walked slowly to the other side and back again, not to be seen again all afternoon. And then the sun went in again.

Late in November there was an Osprey roosting just outside Scunthorpe. This would have been a stop-off on its first migration (it was a juvenile) to West Africa, usually Senegal. Most Ospreys are on their way by the end of September so the bird was late to leave, in fact believed to be one of two still in the UK at that time. I named it ‘Oswald’.

Oswald was last seen on 24th November. 2 days ago someone told me he had spotted in a different location, still in Scunthorpe, but by a different pond.

I headed down this morning to investigate, hoping it wouldn’t be Oswald. Leaving it this late leaves it open to many dangers such as being blown off course into the Atlantic, fatigue due to severe weather and predation.

I went to the given location and from a distance there was what appeared to be an Osprey sitting in a ploughed field close to the ponds. I have to say my heart sank a bit.

Once I got the camera on it though, it turned out to be a very pale coloured, possibly juvenile Buzzard. Known as pale phase Buzzards, these aren’t commonly seen around here.

Sorry about the length of the story and here are some pictures of the Buzzard.

The last image is of Oswald the Osprey, just for comparison. Hopefully by now Oswald is enjoying the sun in Senegal! If so he/she won’t be back until 2025 as they stay over for 18 months on first migration.

More Short-eared Owls, this time hunting along the coast near Mablethorpe. There were four this time and the light was good. Well worth the trip!

Good to see a Short-eared Owl locally. These beauties are over-wintering with us from Scandinavia.

I know, they’re always about, but I never miss a chance to photograph a Robin!
