🏏 PREPARATIONS FOR NEXT SEASON HAVE BEGUN! 🏏

The 2026 season may be over, but there’s no hanging around for our Ground Team and Mr Groundsman, who have already got to work preparing The Parks for next season.

Today saw the end-of-season renovations carried out, with the square now officially put to bed for the winter.

It’s a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to keep The Parks in the best possible condition, and the work carried out now is vital in getting the square ready for another season of cricket.

A massive thank you to our Ground Team and Mr Groundsman for all their hard work throughout the season — and for already turning their attention to 2027! 👏

The cricket might be finished, but the work never stops.

Congratulations to Mike Hesson, our overseas in 1995 and 1996, who is the first individual connected with the Club to coach a team at Test Match level. Mike, a much respected coach, was appointed as Pakistan coach for the current match with England.
Kiwi Mike hails from Dunedin, Otago and made the career defining decision at the age of 22 to move from playing to full-time cricket coaching. A recent coach of both New Zealand and Royal Challengers Bangalore, he was at Godmanchester for the 1995 and 1996 seasons hitting 2900 runs as well as taking 47 wickets. Well done Hess!

🏏 SUNDAY XI FINISH THE SEASON WITH A WIN! 🏏

The Sunday XI finished their season on a high, signing off with a 74 runs victory at The Parks against Milton Bryan.

Batting first, Godmanchester posted 211 for 9 from their 40 overs, with Ben Lemmon leading the way hitting an excellent 77 from 86 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.

George Smith opened up with 34, while Will Blatch (21), Rory Webb (19) and Calum Jamieson (17 not out) also made valuable contributions.

The bowlers then produced an excellent performance to restrict Milton Bryan to 137 for 9.

Kian Rice was the star with the ball, taking 5 for 7 from 7 overs — the first five wickets haul of his career!

Blatch, Jamieson, Monty Green and Ali Westwood also picked up a wicket each.

The result sees the Sunday XI finish the season in second place — a fantastic way to round off their campaign.

15S & 13S HUNTINGDONSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPIONS

If Carlsberg did perfect cricket seasons we’d be well on the way in 2026! Following on from the success of the four senior men’s and women’s sides, both the under 15s and 13s won their Huntingdonshire age group competitions.

On Sunday morning at Upwood, Sawtry and Alconbury Weald were invited to bat in the Under 15 final. Godmanchester’s bowlers were too hot for Sawtry to handle from an early stage apart from their skipper Ben Cooke who hit 24. The accurate seam bowling of Alfie Sullivan (3 for 10) proved decisive and with spinners Christopher Plummer-Coles (2 for 14) and Jeremy Cutworth (2 for 2) weaving their web, Sawtry were dismissed for 57.
Zac Graveling and Louie Jones opening the batting eschewed singles and dealing almost exclusively in fours took the team to 41 before Jones (17) was bowled by Cooke. Graveling ensured a 9 wickets win with some big hitting at the end, striking an unbeaten 40 with 8 fours and a six as Godmanchester won the cup for the eighth time.

At the same time on the second Upwood pitch the Under 11s suffered heartbreak losing by 13 runs to Newborough in the Under 11s final. Godmanchester struggled early on and it required some good batting from the last pair captain Freddie Mews and Joshua Gibson to lift them to 246 for 7. The bowlers took wickets at regular intervals but the Newborough last pair batted with ease to lift their score to 259 for 7.

Our 13s won an extraordinary game of cricket against Newborough. Two of their side batted superbly to both retire at 30 before Freddie Wood (4 for 12) and skipper Jeremy Cutworth (2 for 6) spun the rest of the Newborough batting out for 90. Godmanchester’s reply was an absolute disaster and after six deliveries they were 0 for 3. That became 18 for 5 and then 46 for 7 after a partial recovery from Finlay Harrison (26) and Roshan Easley (13). Harrison found an able partner in Ollie Radford (14 not out) and when the former was run out Jack Manly played a classy unbeaten innings of 10 striking the penultimate ball for four to take his side to victory at 93 for 8.

🏏 HUNTS YOUTH LEAGUE FINALS DAY 🏏

It’s a big day for our junior section this Sunday, with three Godmanchester Town sides heading to Upwood Cricket Club for Finals Day! ❤️🖤

The U15s, U13s and U11s have all earned their place in their respective finals after excellent seasons, and now it’s time to see them take on the challenge.

SATURDAY SECONDS WIN THEIR LEAGUE 🏆

One of the few local cricket matches to actually start on Saturday was the 2nds match away at St Giles 3rds, the only team who could deprive them of the Junior League Division 3 West title.

Godmanchester Town’s Nathan King continued his excellent recent form with 68 containing 10 fours. After a couple of rain interruptions, the third determined the abandonment of the match at 114 for 3 with Eliot Pears unbeaten on 20 and Tom Hamilton on 11. This was enough for Douglas Bentley’s side to win the championship, a great achievement with victories in 75% of their matches.

The Saturday 1sts needing to win, and hope that Kimbolton were defeated, nearly got onto the field at The Parks. However persistent inclement weather thwarted Matthew Anscomb’s team and the match with Cambridge NCI was abandoned. Nevertheless runners-up in the Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division 2 was deserved reward for a really good season and with it promotion to Division 1 for 2027.

Saturday’s late afternoon heavy downpour of biblical proportions put paid to our Sunday match against Clifton in Beds League Division 4.

It’s the final weekend of the season for our Saturday sides, with both the 1st XI and 2nd XI playing their final games of the campaign.

The 1st XI return to The Parks to face Cambridge NCI, looking to finish the season strongly at home.

🏏 PROJECT NETFIX — HELP US REPLACE OUR AGEING CRICKET NETS 🏏

Our cricket nets at The Parks are now over 16 years old and are in serious need of replacement. The run-ups are uneven, the batting strips are worn and the net cages have suffered years of damage and public use.

We’re raising funds towards a brand-new 2-lane practice facility that will provide much-needed, high-quality training facilities for everyone at Godmanchester Town Cricket Club — from our thriving junior section and women’s cricket to our senior players and future generations of GTCC cricketers.

The full project, including a closed metal surround, is expected to cost around £25,000.

We’ve already received fantastic support from club members and patrons, and we’re now launching our GoFundMe with a target of £3,000 towards the project.

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help us get closer to making Project Netflix a reality.

🏏 WEEKEND ROUND-UP 🏏

A weekend of mixed results for Godmanchester Town, with two wins from three across our senior sides — and plenty to look forward to as we head into the final weeks of the season.

The Saturday 1st XI kept their hopes of winning the league alive with a hard-fought 5 runs victory away at Waresley.

After being asked to bat first, Godmanchester Town posted 184 all out from 49 overs. George Smith led the way with a quickfire 30 from 24 balls, including six fours, while Jack Haycock added 36 and Matthew Anscomb made 29.
Chris Whitfield contributed 24 before Matt Milner provided some valuable late runs, finishing unbeaten on 32 from 43 balls, including a four and a six.

The bowlers then did enough to defend the total, with Milner spinning his way to 3 for 28 and Kian Rice 3 for 32. Brad Goss secured 2 for 26 and Whitfield 2 for 36 as Milner got Ashcroft-Walker out leg before wicket for the final dismissal as the home team were bowled out for 179, securing a five-run victory for the 1st XI.

The result means the 1st XI keep their title hopes alive going into the final game of the season next weekend against Cambridge NCI at The Parks.

At The Parks, the 2nd XI secured promotion with a 61 runs victory over Over & Willingham, with one game of their season still to play.

Godmanchester Town posted 250 for 3 from their 40 overs, with Nathan King producing a superb unbeaten 114 from 116 balls, including 17 fours and a six.

Doug Bentley provided excellent support with 53 from 71 balls, while Kyrin Gibbins added a quickfire 42 from just 34 balls, including five fours and a six.

Over & Willingham reached 189 for 5 from their 40 overs, meaning the 2nd XI secured the win — and, more importantly, promotion with one game still to play. Ellen Lemmon was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 25. Their final match is away at St Giles 3rd team, the only side who can prevent the side winning CCA Division 3 West.

Sunday saw the Sunday XI suffer a 3 wickets defeat away at Luton Town & Indians 3rd XI. However the bonus points gained enough were enough for the side to secure promotion.

Batting first, Godmanchester Town finished on 162 for 8 from their 40 overs, with Jack Haycock top-scoring with 67 from 81 balls, including 12 fours. Brad Goss added 25 from 28 balls and Will Blatch contributed 20.

Luton reached 163 for 7 with five overs to spare. Blatch and Kian Rice both took two wickets, with Goss and Max Webb also picking up a wicket each.

With the 2nd XI now promoted and the 1st XI still in the title race, there is plenty to play for as we head into the final weekend of the season.
